Subject: Pictures of 20 (40/20/40) removal??

I'm trying to figure out the best solution for a custom box to fit one of the smaller Kicker square subs (Solo/Solo Baric). Right now the solution that looks the most interesting to me is removing the center console (i.e. 20 seat from the 40/20/40 front seats), building a box to house the speaker, and installing the armrest back on top of the box.

I've seen multiple posts on the forums where someone responds "Yeah I did it, it's easy"... does anyone actually have pictures of it though? I'm sure I can get through the mod no problems but a little reference material never hurts.

Thanks in advance!

I didn't take pics... but it really IS quite easy.

Two tips for you though...

1.) Should be common sense, but I seem to lack that at times... when you go to remove the back bolts, slide the seats all the way forward as well as tilting them forward. It's much easier than trying to get a small wrench on the bolt by going under the seat and getting a 1/4 turn every time. Yes, we felt REALLY stupid after that.

2.) Be gentle when drilling out the rivets and make sure you got a spare bit or two on hand...I launched very sharp drill bit pieces all over the place when I literally shattered the bit with a high speed drill.

Some people have said it's possible to remove it without removing the entire assembly at once...those people are either totally full of BS or worked way harder than they needed to in order to get it out that way.

I tried to find someone with pics before I did it as well with no luck...all I got was finished pics (can be seen on my cardomain site). I put it off for quite some time while trying to become confident I could do it...and honestly...the only way to understand how to do everything is to just get in your truck and start wrenching on the bolts. You figure it out pretty quickly as you go.

Oh yeah...you do have to disconnect a wire harness connector under the driver's side seat so make sure you do it before you rip it out (and don't forget to plug it back in when you put your seats back in). ...I think it goes to the seatbelt chime, but I'm not positive.

...one last thing. Make sure you got a buddy helping you out. It's not required for most of it, but you definitely don't want to try removing the entire seat assembly by yourself. Too much of a risk bending something or smacking into the paint with the underside of one of the seats.

Thanks for the tips (and the link) I appreciate it. Since you've removed the jump seat and have had a chance to look at it outside fo the vehicle, do you mind if I ask you another question.

Ideally, after removing it and constructing a custom box for the sub - I'd like to reinstall the arm-rest portion of the seat to give it that stock appearance again. Do you think that's feasible with the bolts/supports provided for the arm rest? Or do you thin it's going to be a lot of work?

You mention using a small Solo. You do realize that an 8in. L5/L7 will fit into the Q-logic 8 inch truck box, which will fit behind the driver's side rear seat.

That would sacrafice the functionality of the folding rear seat though, correct? I've been told the "behind the rear seat" trick will lock the seat into the down position.

Plus... I hate that jumper seat it's always felt like such a waste of space to me! =)

Honestly I've never even thought about it...to me it seems like it'd take a bit of work, but others have done it. I've read the JL Audio Stealthboxes are built for you to bolt your existing armrest portion onto so it probably wouldn't be THAT difficult. I've talked with a couple other guys who did the same thing with their custom-made boxes, but they didn't really mention how difficult it was.

Here's some pics I've got of it if you want to try and decide for yourself how easy it'd be before removing it:

one note:
if you leave the mounting brakets riveted to the seats and simply unbolt the '20' from the rest of the 'bench' seat, you'll have a GREAT place to mount the finished box.

When I actually get the money for the Elemental Designs system I wanna get, I may have to try that...I'll just bolt my brackets where the rivets were. Sounds like a good idea anyway since the floor isn't level from front to back.

Great tips, much appreciated! Well I bought the 1/2" MDF today... looks like I'm going forward with the plan. I'll do my best to document it with my digi-cam and keep everyone updated.

BTW: GB2000, I noticed your Ohio Dakotas link. Where are you in OH? I'm in the greater Akron area (moving to Fairlawn near the new year).

I'm in Piqua...bout 30 min. north of Dayton. Fairlawn is pretty close to here I think (prolly a 30-45 min drive). We had a kid or two from Fairlawn back at my vocational school so it couldn't have been THAT far from here...but I've never thought to look it up. lol

If you are able to document it all, I can turn it into a how-to to put online for others looking for pics...credit will be given to you, of course.

Dayton is a looooong way from Fairlawn, like 3 hours.

Well, I lost round one with the seats. I thought I could get those bolts loose with just a ratchet, some WD40, and a bit of muscle. Looks like I'll need to find my breaker bar or someone with an air compressor if I want to get this project moving again.

Stay tuned for more updates...

Thanks Scott...I got a buddy of mine who's got an eD system (who convinced me to get one), but if he can't answer my questions good enough, I'll hit you up for the answers.

And you're right...it is a small world. lol

I don't know how to post pictures, but if you visit my home page and leave an email address, I will send you pictures of the sub box I designed for my quad. It looked just like the center console with two 8" subs in it.

A) What does that have to do with this forum/topic. Keep your posts related tot he topic at hand - OR DON'T POST!

B) So your heavy (heavy, heavy) truck... with ONLY a 4 banger in it... is running (aproximatly) a 12 second quarter mile. I've had vehicles that are half the weight of a Dakota (AND turbocharged) that had to fight their way into the 12's. I'll call your bluff - prove it.

My 02 4X4 qc 4.7 auto 3.55's would be lucky to get into the 15"s range.

Timmy DID say 1/8 mile!

But still. More likely 10's in the 1/8 unless he has some good mods, so it's possible. But doubt someone who knew better would talk crap liek that.

BTW Hemi Ram's don't do 7.7 in the 1/8.

Isn't Timmy that handicapped kid on SouthPark, maybe that's why he posted his 1/8 mile times in the AUDIO forum?
