Subject: Custom box under rear seats
IP: Logged

Message:
This may be a dumb question, but....I am guessing that building a quality CC box to sit under the rear seats HAS to be cheaper than a) modifying the rear speaker positions to hold a pair of 8's, or b) buying a Stealthbox. (A Thunderform won't fit my truck.)

Has anyone built a QUALITY box that sits under their rear seats in their Club Cab? If I know I can build a good one, or have one built, I won't hesitate to do so, but I don't just want to shove a box under the seats. By quality I mean that if I pull out the factory tray, I'd be carpeting the floor, not leaving any unsightly gaps, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Current mods: A MUFFLER. That's it. (For now.)
Future mods: Tonneau cover
Underdrive pulleys
Removal of clutch fan
K&N FIPK
17" rims
And much, much more...

Ive seen em around somewhere..it can and has been done...youll probably have to raise up the back seats a few inches and mount the subs facing foward rather than upward..If i find any pics or links Ill send em along

I made a plate that fit instead of the cover of the toolbox. I used on 8" in it so I could still use the seat. After awhile I grew tired of that and made a new plate for two 8" facing motor up. I had to remove that side of the seat, but it turned out pretty good. I used silicone and screws to hold it all down. The area of the box cam out to be about 1.73 cubic feet, so it was more than enough room for my two subs and because of the added room the walls were ridged enough.

Thunderform doesn't make a box for my 94'. It is a bit more interesting building a box from scratch. I am in the process of building a box that replaces ateast one side of the underseat space. It will consist of one base horn and one sealed 8" motor up. Hopefully I can get off this lazy streak and get some work done on it.

Hey Fourgivn1,

I did exactly that, the MTX Thunderform enclosure is a rip off. So I ended up building my own system for 1/4 of the price.

Non taken Bluethunder,

Everything that took to build these boxes, was free. MDF, Paint, Glue, Screws, all free, I deal with alot of contruction trades.
I paid no one to do the work, I did everything myself. So the labour is free, and I enjoyed every second of it.

Do you still have the dimension's for your sub-box? I want to build myself one but since I use my backseat daily (and don't really want to pull the tool tray out, take measurments, and then put it all back together while I build the box) I need to build a box before I remove anything.

If you still have the dimesnsion's could you possibly post them here or e-mail them to me:
canadiandak@yahoo.com

thx

Anthony sent me the dimensions a while ago. The measurements are 45" wide X 11.5" length X 6.5" depth, the center cutout is 9" wide. Each chamber is about .65 cu.in, and he used 5/8" MDF board.
I am going to build a box like his for my two infinity perfect 10's with my JBL 1200W amp in between them. I haven't taken the tray out yet to find out exact measurements but i'm planning on building two boxes each about 16" wide by 15" long and 7" deep using 3/4" MDF. From their I plan on running a board inbetween them for my amp to sit on. Like I said this is my plan and I have no idea if it'll work! Does anyone have any pics of what their back seat looks like with no tool tray (like when they took it out to install their thunderform) if so please send me them. warrenwhitmore@shaw.ca thanks, dodgeee-O.

Just had a sweeeeet box made to replace my rear seats and people can still sit on it. it sits up a bit higher than the seat did and there was quite a loss in head room but a huge gain in leg room. it is charcoal grey to match my interior.
it has (2) 10" concept EX subs firing upward and is a total of 1.4 cu. ft. sealed. on the top inbetween the subs is my amp (concept CCD-800 mono) and a scoche EFX 1 farad capacitor. there are carpeted panels which fit snugly on top to conceal the whole thing. it all cost $1200 canadian and the install was free because it took a while for the shop to get it done. its not as loud as the 2 15s i had before but it hammers pretty good and it looks awesome + i have a back seat again :) i'll post some pics someday when i get my own computer and figure out how.

Anthony, box looks great, but just wondering, how much will you have to lift the seats to make them work with the hinges? How did you do the bottom of the box? Did you use fibreglass like some of the other home made boxes, I am leary of doing that myself. If not, do you know the sizes of board you used for the changing form of the floorpan?

Thanks

hey anthoney you think I could send me the pics you sent the above individuals? I built a box based on the demensions you have on your site only I made it 12 inches deep. and I can't figure out how to get the seat brackets to work. I'm thinking of trying to fiderglass the bottom to try and gain some more mounting depth, If I could get 7inches deep the box would be perfect for my 2 12's.

Wow Conig you brought a post back to life after a year to the exact date. LOL!!

I don't remember which pic I emailed them. The pic with the dimensions is on my site. But the one with the hinges I don't know which it is??
You can't use the factory hinges, because they just wont work with the height of the box. Unless you pre fab something up.

I see that someone turned the tool box in to a speaker box by replacing the plastic cover with MDF. I'm thinking if doing the same going with a 8" mtx and a punch 40. just wondering what it sounded like? I'm not look for thundering bass but do want some bass? Any information would be great.
