Subject: Factory CD player IP: Logged
Message: just bought a '98 w/ infinity premium sound. I have a question about the factory CD player. It doesn't have a cassette like some I've seen, but I don't care. My question is that can you play CD-R's (copies) it it? I tried w/ two different ones and it kept saying Err (error) and spat the CD's out. I know older CD players won't play cd-r's but I just wanted to make sure the CD player isn't screw up. If it won't play them, I guess I'll just have to go out and buy a new copy if I can find it. I own the original CD's so no copyright BS. I just don't want to expose them to the heat inside the truck

Message: i never had a problem playing them. maybe it's the program or format you're using to make them that causes problems.

Message: 1998. I would try diff brand cd's to burn. That's how it was with my older cd players. Some would not work at all. Some work flawlewssly.
I know my 2003 stock cd player worked, but I pulled it out within a week.
And I know my 2004 Grand Caravan works fine too.
Oh, the Grand Caravan one has the cassette too, which I'd never use. All we care about it the CD and DVD changer it has.
But the wife just made a comment last night about it having a cassette player so who knows. Maybe I'll see cassettes laying in the van now :p

Message: A lot of older players have problems with 80-minute CD-Rs, since the track pitch is slightly lower. If you have (or can find) 74-minute discs, give one a try.

Message: A guy my dad knows at work found an *OLD* 74 min. CD-R. Made a copy of my brother's CD and it worked! Still not sure what the problem was, since this time I used a different program which "finalized" the CD. It was a music CD program instead of a disc copier like before. I think it was the 74 vs. 80 min cd though.
Thank you all for the help! I had just bought an extra copy of 2 cds so I saved the trouble of finding the 3rd which is a 3-4 year old album

Message: If an audio CD is not "finalized" it won't be recognized by an audio CD player. That may have been the cause of the original problem. The 74 vs. 80 minute length is always a concern for compatibility with old units that predate the longer format.

Message: I thought the 80 minutes were just slight "over burns" where they burned further towards the edge.
You were able to over burn old disks (risky) even in the early days with better programs like Nero.
I think newer burners and disks are simply made to burn further out to get the extra 6 minutes, etc.
I bet closing the disk, or just another CD made the diff.
I remember in the late 90's when I had some players that only liked certain "color's" of CD-R's. At least that was the way it seemed.

No. The track pitch is slightly tighter.

Message: I see. So it's totally different than doing the "over burn".
