Message: Depends on the year of Dakota. I installed one in my old 2000 Dak and it was simple, hardest part was getting the dash bezel off and connecting the Pioneer stereo harness to the adapter harness for the stock wiring. If you didn't get the stereo wiring harness adapter go out and get one, they are $5-10 at Wal-Mart and worth every penny.
When my 00 Dak got totalled I put the DEH-P77DH deck in my 03 QC, this was more of a challenge since the deck is not supposed to work in an 03 Dak, actually I think it's 01 Dak's and newer. The correct bracketry for mounting the deck into the dash is not provided by Pioneer, though I was able to modify a couple GM brackets (that came with the deck) so they would mount the deck into the dash, this also required shimming the brackets a bit. The deck fit into the dash and looks good, there are no air gaps between the dash and deck. But, the deck is not a "perfect fit" as the dash hole is bigger with rounded corners, while the deck is a 1/4 - 3/8" smaller all the way around with squared off corners (the square corners of the deck almost touch the rounded corners of the dash).
What year is your truck?
Do you have the Infinity upgraded stock stereo?

Message: I have the same thing, an 03 without the Infinity system. Do you have any specific questions?
This install isn't super easy since you have to modify the stereo brackets (grind off a bump and drill a hole) so they will bolt to the stereo and truck. You also need to drill 2 holes into the plastic frame where a couple of the mounting screws for the stereo will go. It took me about 30-60 minutes to figure out the brackets and modify them so they would work with the dash and stereo. This is the only real difficult part of the install.
The rest of it is soldering, or crimping :-( the wires of the stereo harness to the adapter harness. Don't worry about getting an adapter kit that mounts the stereo into the dash opening, they don't make one that will work.
I'll see if I can post some pic's of the deck and installation in a few days.

Message: I beg to differ on the "They do not make a mounting kit for 2001 Daks or newer". I have a 2004 QC that I installed an Alpine head unit in. I got a mounting kit from Crutchfield that the deck slipped into, and then the whole thing mounted to the dash. The mounting kit has the rounded corners and looks factory when complete. A similiar mounting kit can be purchased at Circuit City or Best buy or any other car stereo shop. Also, you will need the vehicle specific wiring harness. This again can be obtained from the above shops. If you can follow color codes and can crimp or solder wires you are in buisness. The worst part is getting the dash bezel off. If you do a search on the forum, there is specifc instructions on how to do this. I hope this helps.

Message: He is trying to install a Pioneer DEH-P77DH 1 1/2 DIN headunit in an 03, not a common 1 DIN headunit. While there kits to install a 1 DIN HU in an 01-04, there isn't a kit to install a 1 1/2 DIN HU in an 01-04.

Message: That would be great DSW if you could post some pics. So much for a direct fitting head unit that Pioneer says. LOL. I have another question. I got one of those mounting kits for a single din to fit into our 1-1/2 Din setups just like what franzit was talking about. I got it for free from cardomain. I was wondering if I could use my dremel and open the hole to fit my Pioneer DEH-77DH? Thanks for yor help. If anyone has any other pics of your install please post hem or send them to me at schwummrigstud@netscape.net . Thanks in advance.

Message: I also bought a 1 DIN kit for an 03 to see if I could modify it to work with an 1 1/2 DIN HU, it didn't work and back it went to Wally World. The square corners of the Pioneer HU stick out past the rounded corners of the oblong bezel, no way to cut it out without hacking the bezel.
When are you installing the deck,,, it looks like the pic's will have to wait until the weekend. I'll pull the dash off and get some pic's of the brackets and how the deck is mounted into the dash.
