Message: i was planning on taking off the driver side tool tray cover and replacing it with a peice of 3/4 mdf. then flush mount 2 8" subs on the right side where its deeper. then just screw it down to the tool tray. the bottom of the box is solid except for where the bolts are so it will pretty much be sealed. wut do you think?

Message: Sounds like it will look like crap. Just get a Stealth Box, and replace the whole tray. 2 10's will sound better anyway, and you'd have a place to mount an amp.
my .02 cents

Message: y would it look like crap? im going to paint it charcoal to match the tool tray as much as possible and you wont even see it anyway. it will be under the seats.
just get the stealth box? well i cant afford it and the stealth box does not have 2 10s. it only has one 8. im not worried about mounting the amp. im goin to put it under the pass seat.

Message: yea i kno. ive been tryin to think of a good cheap way to put sub in my truck and when my buddy told me he was selling his two 8s, it just kinda hit me lol. im still waitin for him to get his new subs and amp so i can buy his old subs and amp. they hit pretty hard in his truck but he also had a "real" all mdf box, not a half plastic half mdf screwed together box. but i still think when i get it done, it will sound nice, at least better than without subs. my biggest concern is rattling, but theres nothin some dynamat cant fix lol.

Message: yea im still thinking of a non-permanant way to seal it. i really dont like doing anything to my truck that i cant take back off. im thinking of running a bead of silicone around the board where it will meet the tool tray. then letting it dry so it turns into kinda like rubber. that way it will smoosh down and seal the box when i screw it down, but will not be fixed to the tool tray.

Message: There are numerous problems with building a box like your talking about, but it's better than no subs at all...
To seal the board to the tool tray (and subs to the board) use some closed cell weather stripping, it will make a nice tight seal and also compress nicely when screwed down.

Message: I don't have a CC, so hence the question. Does the tool tray have reasonably fixed walls? If the tray flexes when the sub hits (like with plastic wall and floor that only has a metal skeleton), that will distort the sound.

Message: hey dsw, where can i get that weatherstripping your talkin about? is it something i can get at a place like home depot? is it expensive?
the whole point of me doing this is to get more bass in my music without spending $300 on a thunderform box. it may or may not sound as good but it will also be about half the price. im planning on spending at most about $100 for my buddy's used 8" subs and amp. and maybe about $50 on materials (not really sure how much mdf costs). i mite even spend a little more money and carpet the thing to make it look a little better.
dsw was thinking the same thing i was, it may not sound the best, but its better than no subs at all.
i just dont want to have a sub box layin on my back seat because i know some idiot will walk by one night and see it and break in just for some subs.

Message: Yup, that's one of the numerous reasons not to use the tool tray,,,
Personally, I would never think of using a cavity of the truck as a wall of an enclosure, but it's got to sound better than not having any bass at all.
I think crappy low power subs would sound better in this type of box, since they will cause the plastic to deflect less.

Message: Weather stripping,,, what ya need to know? Stuff is sold in a roll like tape, is about 1/2" wide and 1/4" thick (though is does come in different dimensions), has a sticky side,,, to,,, umm,, stick to things, costs about $1-2/roll and you can get it at Wally World or Home Depot.
I like the closed cell kind because it makes a better seal.

Message: The subs are 200W RMS Rockford Fosgate 10's. The boxes mount to the floor and back of the truck with a couple of brackets, look for the silver screwheads in the previous pic. The carpeted gray filler panel is also screwed to the sub boxes with brackets.
I am looking at $200 for the boxes, subs, filler panel and brackets.
Now you see them,,,
Now you don't,,,

Message: Yeah, there will be a hole in the filler panel where I had a Pioneer CD changer mounted...
The round thing is a .5 farad cap that I pulled out of an old main frame computer years ago. The funky blue color didn't go with the truck so I said FTW,,, let's carpet it! The cap doesn't go in to the filler panel or anything, it is just resting against it in the pic
I live in Las Vegas, NV and I can ship them as I have them packed in boxes all ready. I have been too lazy, I mean busy, to get them listed on Ebay so far.

If your interested maybe we can work out something on the shipping.
