Subject: What speakers?

I checked previous postes and found nothing that really helped me but I'm wanting to get some different speakers for my truck. I have the stock one but they're not the infinity. What speakers would you recomend. Also I saw that some guys were saying just replace the front speakers and leave the rear one but turn them down. Should I do this or maybe replace the rear ones and not the front? I already have a thunderform with 2 10" 6000's. So I have ok bass I just want the clear highs and mids.

Well tell us about your truck and we can suggest size and brands. Replace the front first, it makes the biggest difference. Alot of guys like the components some like coaxials, you really need to listen to them first and determine what you like.

What do you need to know about my truck? Its a 97 dak 4x4 CC. The front speakers are either 6.5s or 5.25s. I don't really know for certain. The back speakers are 6.5s. What are coaxials? I've seen that name mentioned several times.

Coaxial speakers have the tweeter mounted directly in front of the woofer, so its a one piece unit. They are usuelly cheaper and more compact then component speakers, which have a woofer, seperate tweeter and a crossover.

I believe you have 6.5 all around.

So depending upon what you want to spend I would replace the front speakers first before changing out the rear. Infinity, MB Quart, JL Audio, Kenwood, Alpine, Diamond Audio, Pioneer, Sony, they will have improve your sound quality. You really need to go somewhere and listen to them yourself then decide.

I have JL Audio 3-way components in my truck and like them. I would also like to try MB Quarts, they are the #1 brand in high quality installs.

JL Audio 3-ways, they only have one model XR653CS I think. 6.5", 4" and 1" tweeter. The 6.5" is in the doors, and I built some custom fiberglass kick pods for the other two speakers. Works out great, the only down side is I can't use the parking brake. But I have an automatic. I am thinking about building another set that will allow me to use the brake and have a little more foot room.

You can build kick pods for under $50 and your truck is only down for a few hours. Most of the work is done outside your truck.

R/Truck, sounds great. Is there a website that can show me how to make my own kickpods? I have an automatic too, so I don't really care about the PB. Thanks for the info.

Building custom kick panels for your car is a fairly advanced task, and
requires knowledge (and experience) in working with fiberglass.
This is a kick panel in a nutshell. It takes about 2 days to do this
right, although it is possible to do overnight (a LONG night) in one
vehicle.

Step 1: Cover base area with plastic & duct tape. Then cover the area with aluminum foil.

Step 2: Lay fiberglass over the entire area. Don't worry about getting
the pieces cut to the exact size and shape, you will trim them later. Basically you want to make a mold for the back of the pod, so lay the cloth so it a little bigger then what you need. Mix up your fiberglass resin (follow instructions) and apply it with a paintbrush. Let it dry then do another coat. Once dry you can take it out and trim up a little of the extra material so they are in the shape of what you approx. what you want.

Step 3: Build the baffles for your speakers. Make them just large enough to hold the speakers and give you the proper amount of air space. But the bigger you make them the less foot room you will have.

Step 4: After the fiberglass has cured, set the baffles (with the
speakers properly mounted into the panels and use a back strap to secure
the baffle to the panels or use scrap wood and hot glue. Now, spend some time listening to the car and aim the baffles until you get the best image and stage in the car.
Note: Take your time aiming the speakers - once you fix the baffles,
you won't be able to readjust the speakers. You basically want the speakers aimed up at your face, a little towards the center of the car.

Step 5: Remove the speakers from the baffle and wrap the whole thing with panty hose (one leg worth). So single guys you have to go and buy some panty hose. Tie the ends off near the top of the baffle, so you can just cut if off once your done with the fiberglass.

Step 6: Coat the whole pod with resin, it will take 2-3 coats. Don’t coat the top of the baffle just go up to the sides.

Step 8: After the fiberglass has hardened, cut off the top so the baffle is exposed, sand the surface smooth. This may require the use of a little bondo to get things perfect. You can even glaze your whole pod with a final coat of fiberglass to make things look smooth.

Step 9: Drill you a hole for the speaker wire, don’t worry a little air leak won’t hurt. Just make the hold just large enough for your wire.

Step 10: Cover the panels with carpet, vinyl, leather, fleck stone or
other substance of your choice.

Step 11: Install the kick panels in the car and use a short self-tapping screw with washer to secure the pod. Just drill right on down the bottom of the pod.

Step 12: Install the speakers in the panels.

Step 13: Make speaker baffles from Plexiglas, and grilles or just use the existing grilles.

Step 14: Enjoy.
