Subject: Amp/Head Unit Config? IP: Logged
Message: If i get a HU with two pre amp outputs, can I hook up a subwoofer amp as well as a 4 channel amp to the receiver or do I need a HU with 3 sets of pre amp outputs? I am looking at a few pioneers and alpines and also another thing is the voltage of the pre amps going to matter, say for example one has 2v and the other has a 4v, will the sound quality matter all that much? Thanks

Message: You need to match the HU output voltage to your amps input voltage. IE, an amp that accepts a signal of up to 2v would be put into clipping easily by a 4v or 5v preout HU,,, but, you can run a 2v preout HU with an amp that accepts a 4v or 5v input signal, your not going to over drive the amp's input stage with the 2v HU. Just make sure your amp can accept the HU's RCA output voltage.
The reason they are running 4 and 5 volt outputs on highend HU's is to reduce noise. A 2v deck with .5v of noise has 25% bad signal where as a 5v HU with .5v noise only has 10% bad signal, extreme example, but shows why they run the higher voltage outputs.
As far as the RCA's go, you need 2 pr so you can balance and fade the front and rear speakers, plus 1 pr for the sub. If the HU has 3 pr you are set as 1 pr should be for the sub.
Some 4 ch amps have an RCA "output" that you can run the sub off, if your amp has these outputs you will only need 2 pr of RCA's on your HU.
I saw your other post about your Aiwa deck with only 1 set of preout's. If you like this HU and it has good sound quality you could get a EQ/crossover to solve the multiple RCA problem. I have a Pioneer EQ-6000, 1 pr RCA HU input, 2 pr RCA output for F&R, 1 pr RCA output for sub, 9 band EQ, fader control, sub boost, crossover @ 50,80or120hz. The unit is "old school", but alot easier to use than the EQ and crossover in my new Pioneer DEH-P77DH HU with 3pr or RCA outputs. The newer version of this EQ/Xover is the Pioneer EQ-6500, same basic unit with some other features, about $70-80 online.
Check out Ebay, you might get it for next to nothing.

Message: DSW, Thanks
Also the 4 channel amp is a ALPINE MRP-F240, it accepts 4V so i am assuming I will be fine. THe HU i am looking at is the alpine 9847 i believe, it has 3 pair of outputs. Finally I have two questions, will that power of 40 x 4 RMS from the amp be too much for the infinity reference speakers rated at 45 RMS peak? Would you suggest any sort of dynamat to enhance the sound? Thanks again.

Message: Your 45W rms speakers will be fine on a 40x4 amp as long as you don't clip the amp, if it sounds bad turn the gains on the amp down. Best thing to do is turn the gains down to 1/4, turn the deck up and adjust the gains to the point just before the speakers distort. I had a 2 sets of 35W rms Sony 6 1/2 components (old school good stuff, not the crap they are selling now) on a Soundstream 40x4 amp and cranked the ever livin crap out of the speakers for 10 years, 330K miles. Still have the Sony's ;-)
Dynamat will help dampen the interior noise of the truck and in turn make the stereo sound better, but I can't choke down the price of Dynamat. I don't see the need for an expensive sound deadener when there are other things out there that work, just maybe not as good. Heck I only spent $1000 on my Dak's stereo and it would cost $300 to dynamat the truck. Now, if I was dumping some serious cash into a stereo I would Dynamat. I used many cans and coats of $2 rubberized undercoating from Wally World and some roof sealing membrane to dampen the interior of the truck. Only problem with this approach is the undercoating needs to air out as the interior of the truck will stink to high heaven until the undercoating dries, could be a week if put on too thick as this stuff dries real slow. I have heard that the roof sealing membrane can stink when heated up (summer) but I have not noticed any odd odors. I used a heat gun to soften the roofing membrane before applying it and I didn't smell any bad odors. Maybe I had low odor roofing membrane LOL,,, I doubt it.

Message: Thanks again, I bought the amp and it should be here soon, now I just need that head unit so that I can plug all this stuff in. I will probably pass on the dynamat stuff just because I not spending high end money for my stereo.
You know what sucks though is when somebody breaks your back window when you have all your stereo stuff pulled out of it already. So right now my truck is getting fixed because of some idiot who feels the need to vandalize peoples property. oh well
