Subject: Amp whine & HU ground problem

Ok, I know this has been talked about before, but I have a new twist that I haven't found an answer for while doing numerous searches here. First, I have a 00' QC which I have installed a Panasonic CQ-C330U HU, MTX MXA 4004 amp, Infinity Reference 6000CS's in the front & 6002i's in the rear. I’m using 2 wire harness adaptors that I bought from Circuit City to connect the HU to the factory plug (Panasonic to universal, universal to factory). The amp is mounted on the bare metal rear wall behind the rear seat passenger’s side. Not sure if mounting to the bare metal could be a problem, although the amp has rubber feet and I don't believe any part of it touches the bare metal. I have a 4 gauge power wire down the driver’s side with the RCA & remote wires down the passenger side. I have an 8 gauge ground wire and have tried grounding the amp to the bare metal of the rear wall (I took the paint off one spot). I have also tried using a screw found on the rear seat driver’s side (that is where the ground currently is). I get the whine at both spots.

I think that it might be the radio that is not getting a proper ground, but here is my question. Can the radio somehow get ground through the amp from the RCA wires or from some other place besides the black ground wire attached to the HU? I ask because while I was, and still am, trying to solve the mystery of the alternator whine, I accidentally disconnected the black ground wire coming out of the “Panasonic to universal” adaptor from the green & black ground wire that was connected to the factory unit and THE HU STILL WORKED? I have absolutely no idea where the HU it is getting it’s ground from. The HU works fine without it connected and the whine is exactly the same with or without it connected. Obviously it is getting ground from somewhere, but WHERE?

Sounds like you have a ground loop problem. Try grounding all of your audio gear to the same location. The body isn't a good ground location since you are relying on the factory's body to frame ground wires to carry the additional load of your stereo, the frame is a better location.

On my 03 QC I grounded everything (HU, 2 amps and changer) to the frame below the passanger rear seat and got alternator wine, solved it by running a 4ga wire from the frame ground location to the battery. I guess there was too much resistance from this location back to the battery.

your ground wire needs to be at least the size of (or larger) than your power power. yours is half the size of your power wire, and hence the probable source of alternator whine.
