Subject: Help finding quality subs? IP: Logged
Message: First time posting here.
Im rather new to the specifics of the audio world. At the moment i have purchased two pairs of Alpine Type R's for the front and rear speakers of my 98 CC Sport. My question is, what subs will give me a nice strong ACCURATE sound? Iv only really looked at the Alpine type R subs.
I plan on putting the Sub(s) under my back seat.
I have yet to descide on one or two subs. And i plan on buying a MTX Amp unless any other suggestions.
I have a friend Who knows alot about audio equipment and installation but college has limited our communication.
* PLease, Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Message: what size you want, 8's 10's or 12's? and what's your price range or budget? i would reccomend Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Power Acoustik(what i've got), or Alpine subs. those are just the brands all my friends have and they sound very good to me. JL's are nice too, but too pricey in my opinion, and MTX is alright i guess. whatever price range you have is going to base your choice of the specific model you chose (i.e. a kicker L5 or L7). one or two 10's might be for you if you want nice punchy bass without the low boom to it. Alpine subs are pretty accurate i guess, but i haven't heard but one pair, and the power acoustiks are great in my opinion. i have two 10's (fubr) and they hit hard and still are very accurate (but they tend to loose their quality at higher volumes; my cd player goes to 62 and they start to loose it at about 45-50 volume). RF is a good brand too. Kicker hits hard and very nice at higher volumes, the only thing i don't like about them is they are box hungry, sounds way better in larger boxes like 1.8 cuft+ than smaller ones like 1.0 cuft ones (12's anyway, from my experience) and that couldn't work for my reg cab. hope this helps, good luck finding the sound you want.

Message: Ok wow anything u find at a best buy or other outlet like that, the sub makers are bad especially for the price. Check out brands like Adire, Resanant Audio, Elemental Designs, Arc Audio, Image Dynamica etc... If anyone argues with those brands ur retarded, and for the prices its a steal... Those brands make JL look like crap, cuz they are. Dont by into the brand name crap please

Message: Eh, thanks alot for the responses.
I most likely will be using 10's. They sound like more of what i want to hear. Im almost for sure going to by the Alpine cda9833 deck if that helps out my sub situation.
As far as money is concerned, i would like to keep the subs(if two) and amp all under $700.So im willing to pay for some reasonably good stuf.
Thanks for the advise with the brands. i realise everyone has their own personal choice of course but ill definately look into the RF's and Acoustiks. I dont know where id be able to find any of those other brands cj suggested however.
Cheers to ya, more responses still welcomed.

Message: you can just go to a car audio shop and listen to a bunch of different brands and such, and then go from there. the brands i mentioned are just the ones i have experience with, but i will agree that adire and image dynamics should be looked at also because i forgot to mention them, never heard any of the other three he mentioned though. a professional audio shop will be able to help you more than bestbuy or places like that, and i've found that a shop generally won't try to rip you off(not as bad as bestbuy, thats for sure) plus they will know what they're doing. just something to look into. for $700 you can get a very nice setup with plenty of power and sound to keep you entertained and even do a little showing off. total cost for all of mine came to about $750 for amp, subs, cd player, and materials, but i did everything myself. i still need to upgrade from stock speakers though. anyway, good luck.

Message: AdireAudio.com, RE.com, etc. Im not kidding you when i say these r good subs, I'm not trying to be an ass, but i'd hate to know someone is buying a RF or whatever when i know for a fact their missing out on amazing subs. Everyone starts somewhere and ive learned alot now... Adire is one of my favs, and you can buy their subs from their website for dirt cheap cuz they dont make advertisments and sell in best buy outlets etc, so they dont have to raise the price of crappy subs, aka any MTX sub i might buy for 50 bucks max, but they need to make up for the $ lost in adds. Please check out adire. I could bet you all my money if you bought or listened to an adire over any RF youd crap ur pants... Go to Caraudioforum.com and do a search, you will be amazed on the feedback on the Adire subs, and RE, ED and other brands get. Im just really trying to help

Message: I have recently become acquainted with Memphis Belle amps and speakers. They do a very nice job for me and for the price. One of the things I like the most is that they have amps that are configures to act like two separate amps. They have a 4 channel part for your normal speakers as well as a class D for your sub/s. I bought the little one for about $450, not bad for 2 amps and it is too much for my 8" (I know 8" little guy, but I did it for the room). When you buy a Head Unit, make sure you get one with sub pre-amp outputs. It will make it sound better and be much easier. And usually a head unit with the sub pre-amp output, the head unit will have a funstion to control the base.

Message: Rockford Fosgate P2 series subs.
That's what I've been using ever since I wanted a LOT more with only one sub.
They cost around $150 each. But, they have a HUGE excursion. 2 inches vs. the typical 1 inch! (excursion is the movement in and out).
So one sub is almost as loud as two standard subs.
The only problem I've had is over powering it with too big of an amp. the sub pounds nicely. At best Buy I bought the 4 yr warranty and have taken it back any time I've fried the voice coil. I've got a rather large amp bridged to the thing. I'm tempted to go to two 10's in the future.

Message: So it finally really just struck me that there are so many brands out there and so many good ones. Its darn hard to choose. think i might be leaning towards one ten under the back seat since id liek some etra storage room under there too. I hit up ultimate electronics the other day and wasnt to pleased with what i was hearing for subs.
Im still working on the head unit. i looke at the alpine 9833 while i was at UE and it was nice but i really dig the screen on the 9835 but cant seam to summon myself to spend the extra 100-200 bucks on it. would it make sense to buy the 9847 for the screen instead of the 9833 for the extra options especially the 26watts instead of 18watts that the 9847 has?

Message: The choice is yours, is it worth it to you for the screen? The wattage as weel, are you going to put an amp to the mid and high range speakers? If so, then the wattage the radio puts out is completely irrelevant, just make sure it has all of the pre-amp outputs. Personally, I think I would go for the cheaper head unit and get a 2 amp system. Make sure it sounds good. I have a sony head unit with a neat screen that came with it. It was cool to start out with, but now its just there. Sounds great, but just a novelty.

Message: Nick, I have just what your looking for out of my 2000 CC that I totalled last December. If you looking to keep storage space under the seat, these boxes give you MORE storage space then the stock tool tray. Yeah I know, how can you put 2 subs under the seat and have more storage than the stock tool tray, check out this link,,,

The subs sounded great in my truck running off a bridged RF 301S amp, though the pair of subs can handle more power, 400Wrms. I'd say this setup is more for sound quality than LOUD boomy blaring bass.
Looking to get rid of the subs AND enclosures. Email me if interested, I can send you some more pic's.

Message: I think I'm going to need to step up to TWO subs this summer. I think I overdid my single Rockford Fozgate 10" P2 again!
It sounds GREAT turned up loud, butthem little 2 inch voice coils seem to fry after a while.
If I had two instead of one I wouldn't power the ever living sh*t out of them like I am one.
I have my amp bridged to the one now and will be running un bridged to two subs. The amp is pretty big for one 10" sub. (480 watts RMS)
