Subject: Wiring Question for Thunderform IP: Logged
Message: I just bought an MTX Thunderform for my '02 CC Dakota. It is unloaded, and I was thinking of putting in a couple of MTX thunder 6000's on a Hifonics 2x90 watts RMS amp. My question is about the Ohm rating on the subs. They are 4 ohm subs, but it looks like the enclosure is wired with one output. Does this mean I need to bridge the amp, and if so will that change the resistance? The loaded version comes with subs rated at 8 Ohm, and I just don't have any experience with car stereo. Any input would be appreciated.

Message: The one output of the Thunderform puts the subs in parallel which means that 2 - 8 ohm subs will present a 4 ohm load, or 2 - 4 ohm subs will present a 2 ohm load to your amp. With the Thunderforms parallel output (1 output for 2 subs) you will need to bridge the amp so it is configured as a 1 channel amp.
The problem you might run into is that your amp might not be 2 ohm stable in bridged mode, check the amp specs. If your amp is only 4 ohm stable in bridged mode you'll need to either use 2 - 8 ohm subs in parallel which will present a 4 ohm load to the amp or get an amp that's 2 ohm stable in bridged mode. The only other way to use 4 ohm subs in a Thunderform is to run them in stereo, but,,, the Thunderform is not wired to run the subs seperately.
I would either run 2 - 8 ohm subs in parallel with 4 ohm stable bridged amp or run 2 - 4 ohm subs in parallel with a 2 ohm stable bridged amp.
If you drill holes in the Thunderform to run the wires from the 4 ohm subs directly to the stereo amp, this is a possibility, but you would be drilling into your brand new TF :-(

Message: DSW,
Thanks alot for the help. I don't plan on doing anything else stereo wise, so do you think I should just get a mono amp? If so, does anyone have a suggestion for brand, size, etc. Reading previous posts, I know that the fit is tight under the seat, so if anyone is running a mono amp I would love to hear what brand and size it is.
Thanks again,
Strider

Message: I have the thunderform with two Image Dynamic IDQ subs in it...I run a JL Audio 500/1 mono amp and it performs perfectly. The amp fits underneath the drivers seat and I can still move it forward and back, and I have never had a heat problem (it's 100 and over every day of the summer here in NorCal).
