Hey Chris,

What year is your truck? Also do you have the rear doors or is it a regular extended cab?

JL Audio makes some pre-fab subs that fit in nicely, but they're really expensive. I put 2-8" subs under the tool tray under the left rear seat and it works pretty good. It's not super loud, but it fills in the bass quite well.

i got a 98 "regular" extended cab, no quad cab. i think they didnt come till '00. yea ive already have 2 10' subs. i was thinking about trying to make a box and just put just 1 under the left rear seat but i think ill mess it up. does anyone know how much room there is between the bottom of the box and the metal floor of the cab?? i would think they would be touching but maybe theres a 1/2" between them. the more room the better.

What kind of bass are you looking for? I spent a number of years working with and installing subs/boxes. If you are looking for that nice, not too boom bass, one 10 will do you nicely, and you can fit it under the pass seat. All you have to do is measure the dimensions under the seat, and allow room for the seat to move. build the box out of MDF, which you can pick up at home deopt, or lows.. or any other hardware outlet as such. Use the dimensions you took and build the box measuring the outside deminsions you took earlier. before you glue and screw the box together tack it up with a little elmers school glue and check for fit. if it is kosher, then use liquid nails to seal up all the edges and stainless steel screws on the corners, top and bottom. When you cut the hole for the sub don't cut it too big, use a template ( available at any audio store for free ). cut the wire port, make sure you have a good seal so as not to allow air leakage. then you are ready to hook up and enjoy the sound without the sights. Any Q's let me know

Chris, check out my thread:

http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/aud/2484-1.html

I wrecked my CC a couple of weeks ago and removed the custom fiberglass bottom sub boxes which I am going to sell. If you look at the pic's in the first post you can see that the jack fits in between the sub boxes nicely. I am going to sell the boxes (and maybe subs) in a week or two so I can get a good 12 for my new QC. I made the boxes about 5 1/2" deep so the RF XLC's would have 3/4 - 1" of room below the magnet.

Let me know if your interested,,,

Dan

dam thats a nice box. but im only a really srict budget and wouldnt even be thinking of putting a sub in if i didnt already have one. but i did think of a cheap way to make one fit. tell wut you think:

i know it mite not be the best looking or the most professional way to do it but..... wut if you flipped up the left seat, take out the cover, drill a 10" hole in the top (left side) of it and mounting the sub uner it. then cut out a little part of the box that the sub hits and put the cover and sub back on the box. just leave the seat up and when you dont want ppl to see it, just put the seat back down. the only problem (well not the only one but one of them) would be that all the plastic and the side panel would probly rattle.

The sead idea would take more work that it is worth. I have seen it done, but the coils heat up way too fast. Then you'd be stuck with a hole in the seat, and a useless sub.

DSW.. How much did you say that you were selling the box and sub for? my wife if lookin for something like that but she don't want me doing any more constuction on her dak..

Chris, no problem, been there too,,,

I don't follow what you were trying to do. Was it, mount a board on the left side of the tool tray and mount a sub to the board? I have heard of this done with 8's, but I don't think there's enough depth for a 10 unless it's realy shallow. This isn't a good enclosure since the plastic tool tray will flex realy bad.

Goose442, I'll be selling them in a week or two what I can free up some time to get them packed. Check back, I'll be selling the boxes, subs, filler panel, etc for $200 + shipping.

well i was talking about drilling a hole in the plastic cover. i never thought about the heat. i didnt even know that they made a lot of heat. yea my 10" is a little too long and i would need to trim a little bit out of the bottom of the box to make it fit. and then after all that i would still need to find a place to put the amp. by the way, its a 400w sub.

hey goose, i was thinking about wut u said about putting the sub under the passenger seat. i didnt think there was enought room under there. my sub is 4 5/8" deep plus the width of the mdf and your lookin at 5 1/2-6". i thought there was only like 3-4" of room under ther if that.
also trying to hold onto my original idea, wut if you put dynamat all over the bottom of the cover? do you think it will still make stuff rattle? i know it wouldnt be a sealed area or anything, but either are bandpass boxes right?
DSW, if your still confused, i can try to get a real pic and upload it to show you wut i mean.

goose442, sounds good. I "should" be able to get them packed up this weekend, you know how that goes sometimes. LOL

Chris, I think I know what your trying to accomplish, the only probelm will be in making the sub enclosure sturdy and air tight. My RF subs are also 4 5/8" deep and I had to raise the front of the seats up about an inch to get the subs under there. Not only do you need to keep the sub from hitting the floor, you also need to allow extra room for the subs vent (hole in the magnet) to breathe. The sub's magent should be unobstructed by the diameter of the vent, if you have a 1" vent the sub's magnet should be 1" away from the box. If not the voice coil can heat up and toast the sub like goose442 mentioned.

You mentioned that this type of an installation is like a vented box, but vented boxes are built to tight specs, proper air volume and proper port dimensions. If either of these are off, the sub will sound bad and could get burned up easily.

How about this, build a small down or angle fire box to fit in the foot area of the back seat. If the sub is firing down or into the seat no one will be able to see the sub. Heck, you might be able to attach a couple of 1x2's on the front of a cheap pre-fab sub box. Just make sure the sub stays away from the floor or seats, reason for the 1x2's.

Here's another idea that's been thrown around on this board. If you have the 40/20/40 front seat remove the 20 section and build a box to fit in there. My 03 QC seats have 10.5-11" of room between the front seats, barely enough room for a 10" sub box, but doable.

Sorry, but I realy don't know a good way to build a box into the tool tray area that doesn't take a lot of time and $.

thanks for the info, i use the center seat (well the armest) all the time so i dont really wanna remove it. theres a lot of vandalism around here late at nite so thats why i wanted it too look like i didnt have anything done to it.
i know it wouldnt be like a ported box but i was thinking it mite not be that big of a deal if it wasnt sealed. i would have about an inch under the magnet if i trimmed a little. in the tray, the back slants down and forward and thats wut the magnet hits. i just dont know if theres space behind the tray or not. if there was space, i could trim it and the sub would fit right it. i guess theres only one way to find out. after i make my final decision about where i want the sub and where im going to put the amp, i guess if i still want to put it there, ill cut it a little and find out how much room is behind it. well im going to search this site for places for the amp.

The tool tray is pretty close to the floor of the truck, maybe 1/2" of clearance. There's also a peice of rag type sound deadening material under the tool tray. Drill a small 1/16" hole through the tool tray to see how much room you have underneath.
