Subject: Which headunit? IP: Logged
Message: I am replacing the stock headunit in my 02 Dak. I am not looking to spend a lot of money and i have it narrowed down to an Alpine CDM-9821 45x4 with 16W RMS or a Sony CDX-R3000 52x4 with 23W RMS. They are both about the same price. I am leaning toward the sony. Anyone have any experience with thses to units? what would you guys do?

Message: Well, im really not looking to spend much at all. I would say $150-160 max. Im not looking to make a great sound system, just have something that sounds better than the crappy stock. I thought maybe sony would be a better choice becuae it gave out more watts RMS than the alpine, no?

Well, the power ratings on head units are pretty much pointless. The ratings are derived on the bench, with the power supply held to 14.4 volts, and only one channel loaded. This is nothing like you'd find in a vehicle; the DC supply will be closer to 12.75 volts at the radio, and you'll typically have all four channels loaded.

Message: If your gonna spend $150-$160 already on an "OK" sounding radio then why not just go ahead and spend $200 on a nice sounding radio in the first place. I'd go with the Alpine over the Pioneer myself.
Hit some of your local audio shops and price them, then ask if that is the installed price.
Several of our local places here in Florida only post their "installed" price with the uninstalled/not advertised price usually being $50-100 less in most cases. Many times you have to ask to find that part out. I have bought before and told them I would install it myself and they charged me the full "installed" price because I didn't specifially ask about an uninstalled price.
I don't need to pay someone to solder wires or change speakers, I have that much common sense.

Message: Pioneer for me! My first and last Alpine deck spent more time in the repair shop than in my truck, I would never buy another because of that.
I used to like Sony, I had one of the first in-dash CD decks and it was a real nice unit. Funny thing about that deck, it was 2 peices, the unit in the dash was the CD player and it had a seperate tuner that you mounted elsewhere. Now Sony is real cheap. I had 2 sony decks after the first one, they both had problems after a couple of years, skipping, error codes, display sections burning out :-(

Message: I would reccomend Eclipse first, Alpine second, and after that, it's all about the same quality jap crap electronics based on your budget.
