Subject: Running wires for stereo? IP: Logged
Message: I need some advise on running wires to hook up my amp in my club cab. I want to run the wires in a conduit along the frame rails. There are knockouts in the floor of the rear but I don't know if they are tack welded or just glued. I am hoping there are some pass throughs behind the dash for running wires off the head unit. Please let me know if you have any tips. Thanks.

Message: I wouldn't recommend running the wires outside the truck, for two reasons.
Even though the wires have insulation they will rust over time with the constent exposure to moisture, and temp changes.
You don't have to go through as much trouble by running them inside the truck.
Run the power through your firewall, along the driver side trim, there is plenty of space even for the larger gauge power wires. Run the RCAs along the passenger side. All you need to do is pop off the kick panels, and the trim on the floor, its very easy.
That is the way 95% of people do it.

Message: There are a few panels that you can sand the paint off and run a bolt thru. Depends on where your at in the install. If you don't have any panels off and metal exposed you may have to be a little creative. Plus most of the factory bolts are coated and may not be a good ground.
I would suggest the frame right behind the side panel, where you can get to both sides of the interior metal panel. Remove paint, and use a large bolt, with star washer (avoid screws). This is a ground that will last forever, and you can hook up a distribution box to it that wire, so later on you don't have to search for a new ground.

Message: If its not to far to run your grounds to your seat belt bolts.. Do it there.. good solid place to ground them.. i always try and ground my wires there.. In cars its a little bit different.. If the amp is sittin in the trunk of course.. but in a truck its not that far to run them there..
My 2 cents.

Message: The only problem with the seat bolts are that some of them have a coating on the bolts and lots of paint around them. Just make sure your getting it on bare metal.

Message: The longer the power cables and the rca cable run next to one another the more noise you will pick up. You can cut a very small slit on your rubber boot that is on the drivers side firewall and pass the power wire thru that. I would advice you run the power and rca away form each other unless you want to listen to buzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
