Message: how many amps is 400 rms from an amplier going to require from the alternator?
Will I be able to run a 400 rms amp with an alternator creating 92 amperes (the volume can be turned down a little too).

Message: Depends on the amp. furball69 has given you the formula, but you also need to account for the fact that the amp is not 100% efficient at converting the amps in into watts out.
In other words 400watts/12 volts = 33+ amps, but in reality the amp may need 40-60 amps to create the 400 watts.

Message: Right, the heat output of the amp at full volume may be equal to that of a 100 watt light bulb or two - maybe more so you would need to add 25 to 50 percent to the 33 amp fuse rating. Then again my 400 watt amp runs fine with a 30 amp fuse because it's never cranked to full volume.

Message: Well I just got a Kicker S8L7 and i love it, and i was trying to use a 500 rms digital mono amp, but the power does not seem like it's there. I know its not the equipment, they are flawless. Something with my electrical system is not good.
Im trying to use the 500 rms amp on the 90 amp alternator, and i think i might be using all the remaining amperes its got.
So should i get a new battery, like an Optima red top, or should i get a whole new alternator or both. Capacitors are crap everyone says, ive never trusted them anyways.

Message: If the alternator is the weak link then I think that makes the answer pretty clear.
At peak power that amp will probably draw around 50 amps which leaves you with 40 amps to run your car. Your car probably needs at least 50 amps just to run with head lights on at night not to mention charging the battery and running accessories like the heater or wipers.

Message: Just so everyone knows......
It works perfectly. My headlights do not dim, and I can crank it up loud, and still have power to start my truck everytime.
My amp is actually 900 RMS in 2 ohms , hahaha. I dont think it's using all the energy it can, but it's so loud i turned it down.
In other words.....dont worry about the electrical system if you have the weak 90 amp alternator like me. There are no problems after a week.

Message: Also remember, that most amps won't actually put out the full wattage rated, and you also need to check at what voltage the RMS value is rated at. When driving down the road, our alternators actually put out 14.4V, and most amps are rated at 12V. Also, most alternators put out more amps than what they are rated. The stock 110amp alternator on my T-bird actually puts out 114amp at 2K RPM as tested by Vatozone. Also, if you are using underdrive pulleys, you will have problems at idle because the stock alternaotr only puts out like 60amps at 800RPM.

Message: any time you're concerned about current draw, one of the best ways to check your draw is to count up the fuse ratings. and from my 10+ years in the industry, a good 400wRMS amp is going to have a 40A( or less) fuse...therefore, it's drawing less than that.
