Subject: question on speakers IP: Logged
Message: Alright, i have my HU installed and love it, really good upgrade from stock. so the next thing i'm going to upgrade is the speakers. where i'm confused is when the speakers say they are two way, three way, and four way. what exactly do these mean? and which would be the best for me since i listen to anything from rock to country to rap. in other words, the best for a very broad selection of music. and any suggestion on a good brand, i was thinking either pioneer or alpine type-r's, something that won't break the bank but will still sound good. i appreciate any responses. thanks.

Message: Its the number of speaker components used in the single unit.
A two-way is the same as a coaxial speaker -- its a mid and a tweeter. Three ways have three components, a tweeter, upper-mid, and a woofer usually. Four ways have four.
Generally its a way to use cheaper components to build a speaker, so you find three and four way speakers commonly marketed to the low-end marketplace where "four speakers, yo!" is for some reason an attractive feature.
What sounds good is very subjective, you should listen to the various options. What most people think sounds good isn't particularly accurate (ie, lots of people think Bose home stereos are great, but they've got horrible sound quality).

Message: I would agree with dotorg about the different type of speakers. I've ran all sorts of different brand speakers (mainly sub's) and really only have a few suggestions on which brands to buy. The cone of the speaker (the front of the speaker) should not be paper, the plastic (or whatever they make them out of) gives you a better sound because it's a much more sturdy surface. The stock paper speakers, no offense, are pretty much crap. It's one of the small things that car makers do to save and make money on their side. It's the whole, it works enough to sell so why make it better...
Anyone else have any opinions?

Message: tek: Its a mistake to assume composite or plastic cones are better than paper. Many of the best raw components out there (used in 5-figure speaker systems) use paper cones. Composite parts are cheaper than comparably performing paper, so thats why they are so common. A lot of stock speakers are treated cloth cones, not paper.
For the low end stuff you'd find at a Best Buy or most car stereo shops, you're right, though. Buy from a high-end speaker supplier like Madisound, however, and leaving paper cone speakers off the list of possibilities leaves off a lot of good value speakers that are far superior to common consumer junk.
