 Subject: Port question

I am trying to port my subs, the instructions call for a vent port 3 x 12.5 x 20Deep. I don't have room to put the port facing the same direction as the sub. Ex. the face of the sub will be going north, but the port will be going east or west. the box is much wider than deep, will this work, or will it sound bad?
