Well.....for those of you who are thinking about undertaking the
poject of building your own sub box please take my advice. DO
NOT USE PLYWOOD. I used what I had and figured I would paint
it and it would look good until I had the cash to build one out of
mdf. It looked great until I painted it. Now every single wood
grain shows through the paint no matter how much you sand
and how many coats of primer and paint you put on. Even
though this was an experiment I am a little disapointed in the
finish. It looks like I am going to have to at least carpet the front
and lid. I do have the material for that I purchased last year and
never used on another project. However there is some good
news. At least to me.

The design I came up worked out awesome (my opinion). I
suceeded in building a box that will house 2 10" Kicker L7's and
a rather large Punch 800a2 Rockford amp while still using the
rear seat. The height only increased a little more that 5" and my
friend who is 5' 10" can sit on it without his neck getting stiff.

I really didn't want to post and pics after I painted it, but I
realized that it may help someone with their own design and at
the very least show someone what NOT to do. Here is the link
again if you all feel inclined.

Ok, I feel sorry for you. One thing I have learned over the years is to be patient and save for what you really want then to do twice as much work and end up wasting more money. Plywood was a poor choice. In order to make it look good painted you'll have to bondo it to get a smooth surface. But plywood flexes and that is a very bad thing when it comes to woofer boxes. But it isn't a total waste, you learned from it.

What kind of paint did you use?

A really good type is called melamine. It is usually used for kitchen cabinets etc. Very tough, very durable and goes on very easy with a foam roller. You might be able to save your box after all.

I made my box out of mdf and painted it using this stuff. I couldn't quite get the colour to match but the finish turned out great!

The plywood is 3/4" AC. I didn't want to spend a whole lot until I
knew my design was going to work. I already had the plywood
laying around so it didn't cost me anything. I used just regular
old Krylon black paint and krylon primer. Awesome job on your
box fiendish. I wish I had read you response a little earlier. I just
went ahead and installed it today after all. I was planing on
making this project an experiment anyway. I justy wish the finish
would have turned out a little better is all. I am familair with
melamine, but I didn't know there was a paint with that name. I
had considered using melamine fiber board at first, but you
need a speacial saw to cut it correctly. The paint on stuff your
talking about sounds real interesting. Where did you get it from?

Thanks,

LM

I just posted a pic on my site showing the box with the subs and
amp mounted and working. I still have to install the back rest in
my truck and clean up a bit. I am going to start the "official" box
in a week or two. Now that I have learned my lesson. My friend
Josh already wants to buy the old box. I can't imagine why. The
pics don't do the design justice. I'm pretty proud of it. The
system really pounds now. I had a vented box in my old dak and
it was really boomy. Now when it hits you can really feel it in
your chest. Here is the link again....

Being up here in Canada, I got the paint at home hardware. They have their own line of paint (beauti-tone). Here is the link if interested.

Other major paint companies should have it also. Benjamin Moore, Behr....

Overall, I think you made a great looking box (except the finish). Great job if that was your first attempt at speakerbox building. I'm on number three or four myself. It certainly isn't as easy as it looks.

I'm going with a full glass install next year. Now that is going to be fun!
