Subject: Good Speakers? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. Heres my question. I have the MTX Thunderbox sitting under the seats of my 2000 Dodge Dakota Ext. Cab. I also have a new Sony FX 7000 CD Player in the dash. I am looking to upgrade my main speakers to get rid of distortion when I turn up the volume. I went to my local speaker store and looked at some Sony Xplode 6 1/2 XS-V1635X for the front and the back.
This is the link for them if you want to look:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-gByTabrZV1i/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=400&I=158XS1635
Does any one have these, and what do you think about them? And do you get any distortion at high volume?
Thanks for all of your help.
P.s. My CD Player puts out 52w. Should I get an amp for the speakers? And if I do, what size?

Message: Most people will tell you that you can do a lot better for the money then Sony. Too bad you've already have a sony head unit, but you can learn from that mistake and not get sony speakers. If the looks an name are more important then sound and quality then by all means get the Sony stuff. Now i'm not saying Sony sucks, just that for the price you can get a better product.

:)
i'm looking at some pioneers, great range, sound great, good prices. i'd say they are probably at the lower to mid range of the upper end of car speakers (if that makes sense).

gonna try them for a while un-amped, as my hu puts out 50w per channel too.

Message: try polk audio db series. i have some db675's,
6-3/4" in the back doors of my QC w/ a small (300 watt) Pioneer 4 ch amp. polk also makes some separates (db 6750-6-3/4") i'd recommend for the fronts so you can mount the tweets up higher on the door panel or pillar.

Message: I really like Alpine speakers, I have a set of the Type Ss in my Dakota. I have never had them distort at high volumes but I usually never go above 27 on the volume. An 52 watts would be fine, IMO, but I'm not an expert.

Message: As you have heard sony id not the best for the money and part of the reason is there products are not certified like better car audio equipment. This is the reason a 400w sony amp will be about 200-300 dollars less than a good one. The better ones actualy do give you 400w of power a sony which I have tested will give you about 150-200w. Which leads me to this your sony deck at 52w or really 52w by 4 in all acuality you will only be giving your speakers about 10w each. Even with a top of the line head unit it may only be 12-17w to each speaker which is not enough power to give after market speakers and have them sound there best. If you amp them they will not distort at high volumes and will just plain sound better. If you dont believe go to a good audio store and crank up there mid range speakers off the deck then amp them and crank it you will be amazed it is night and day. Almost any store will do this for you. Oh ya and a good buy on speakers for infinity 6000i coaxil about $100.00 or if you want really good sound memphis audio Memphis also makes some of the smallest and best amps i have ever heard but there not cheap.
Just my 2 cents,
Joe

Message: Since playing around with audio, I like the memphis line. Good speakers at a good price. They also have a 5 channel amp, 4 channels for mid to high range, and one channel for your subs. Works great. I have replaced my door speakers with them also. I like the system a lot.

Message: ive had RF coaxils in my doors, they were fairly clear an crisp, mid range decent, but the highs could have been a little clearer.
i sold them an bough infinity reference components. amazing.... soo clean an crisp, the mid bass is nice, and the high is really clear.

Message: Go for infinity all the way. Awsome highs, and mid range is sweet. I have 6 1/2 Kappa components up front, and 61/2 Kappa 2-ways in the back runnin off my Alpine CDA-9831 head unit. I will be amping them up soon though, because once the volume gets up past 25 on most songs, the bass gets very muddy because I am severely under powering the speakers. The RMS on the components is 85 watts, and I only have 18 goin in from the head unit if that gives you any kind of idea. They were worth every penny though, amazing speakers.
