Subject: WIll my subs be O.K. with this amp?

I understand that if your amp is below the power recommended for your subs you have a better chance of blowing them. But my question is will be ok for one time use only. Here's the scenerio. The local sound competition is comming up soon. I have two 12" PG sub sthat can handle 350 watts a piece. I have a 500 PG amp. Will it be ok to run it like this for one time only? Will it be ok to run it under such harsh conditions?

I realy don't get why people say your going to blow subs with an an amp that's under the power ratings of the subs. Subs that can handle 700Wrms running off a 500Wrms amp will play all day long without toasting the voice coil, there isn't enough power being delivered to the subs to cook them. If you take a 700Wrms amp and play it at 1/2 volume on 700Wrms (2-350) subs, this certainly isn't going to hurt the speakers, just like the under powered amp won't hurt the speakers.

Here's the real problem, you have subs that can handle 700Wrms and only running it off a 500Wrms amp,,,sooo you crank up the gains on the amp trying to get every bit of power out of the amp that it can deliver. But in doing so you have set the gains too high and put the amp into clipping when it's cranked up, this is VERY bad for subs and the amp, you could cook one or both.

Running subs off a underpowered amp isn't bad, turning the gains too high on an under powered amp and clipping the output is realy bad. As long as you don't clip/distort the amps output you will be fine, but then again, your going to a competition and will probably run the system at full potential or maybe past it's limits. If the subs distort or sound funky turn the gains down, your probably clipping the amps output. The only real way to check if your clipping the output is looking at the output signal with an oscilloscope, but how many people have access to an Oscope?

I have never toasted a sub underpowering it, but have toasted several subs overpowering them. Problem with overpowering a sub is the sub will take all the power you can throw at it until the amp cooks tha subs voice coil, could take a couple hours or a coupls months.

Sorry for the long rant, I guess I never answered your question.

Your 2-350Wrms subs will be fine as long as you don't set your 500Wrms amp's gains too high.

That's cool, just could have took it 2 ways, a bunch of crap or the truth, no harm, no foul.

It just kills me when I hear "don't under power your subs" or "your subs will be fine by overpowering them". It all comes down to adjusting the gains on the amp, whether the amp is over or under the capacity if the speakers.
