Hi everyone, I have a 1998 Dodge Dakota Club Cab and I am totally new to car audio. I just got a job so I'm starting to look into getting a system. I have an old Kenwood cd player, but it needs replacing, so I guess I'm starting from scratch. Now I don't listen to a whole lot of rap, mainly just Rock/Alternative/and some Indie. So i'm not really looking to blow everything away with my system, I just want a nice, small system that will sound good with what I listen to. Like I said, I'm new to this, so if anyone could make some suggestions on what to start out with that would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and I would like the sub and amp to fit right under the back bench of my truck. I've seen boxes that fit under there, so that shouldn't be a problem. Is that a good way to put in the sub?

What's your budget and are you going to piece the system together or install a complete system?

In my 00 CC I installed a Pioneer CD deck, Pioneer CD changer, 2pr Infinity components, 2 10" RF subs (owned), 300W RF sub amp and a 160W Orion mid/tweet amp for $700-800. I did all the work and bought everything off Ebay or online which saved a ton of money. It's better to get high quality equipment at a low price than over priced low quality equipment.

Local stores will offer advice and sell extended warranties which are important for beginners who might buy low quality equipment or blow it up, but are very over priced. Online sellers will sell you equipment at deeply discounted prices, but your not going to get good advice or warranties. Decisions, decisions,,,,

As far as the sub box goes, you can build a custom MDF/fiberglass sub enclosure which replaces your tool tray if your handy with tools or get a Stealth box or Thunderform. I built 2 custom "under the seat" MDF/fiberglass sub enclosures which cost about $50.

The crappy part of the whole thing is you can spend a ton of money on good equipment, install it poorly, and it will sound like,, um,, crap :(

Well I really have no set budget, but like I said I don't really want to spend a ton installing a huge system. I could probably spend about $600.

I'm not really sure that I could install everything myself, so I would like to get a professional to do it. I could probably build the box by myself, but I would have no idea where to start. If I had an idea of what I was doing, then that would be alright.

Since you don't listen to much rap, I wouldn't go very expensive on the subs. A good set of front and back speakers(easier to install if you use stock sizes) are always good, as well as a set of tweeters. If I were you, I would get a head unit that has an amp in it to power the speakers.

Look into a Pioneer DEH-P77DH, I am realy happy with mine, it's not MP3 compatable though:( 22Wrmsx4, and 3pr of RCA's if you decide to amp your speakers at a later date.

A deck, component speakers (mids and tweets) up front and some coaxes in the back will probably run you $300-400 online for good equipment. If you not satisfied with this then add an amp and sub, $200 online. If your patient and watch Ebay you can pick up some realy good deals, just takes time.

Here's a rundown on my system, Pioneer DEH-P77Dh deck $170(new), P608 Changer $108(new), 2pr Infinity 605cs components $150(1 new, 1 open box), RF 301S sub amp $110(new), Orion 435 4ch amp $65(open box), 2 RF XLC 10" subs (owned), wires & supplies $100. Not everything was brand spanking new, but I couldn't tell the difference on the few items I bought off Ebay that were open box store returns.

I have a Clarion head unit. I'm to lazy to go outside and see the exact model, but it cost me around $220. I really like it. It has good power to the speakers and it is asthetically pleasing.
