Subject: Door Speaker wiring IP: Logged
Message: I'm trying to put in new speakers in the doors of my
1997 Dakota Club cab but I ran into a promlem when I tried to run the wires through the factory rubber wiring tube. The thing is extremly difficult and frustrating when trying to get it off. I got the wire part of the way through but it just won't go all the way through. Do you have any suggestions for the best way to get the new wires through?

Message: I just ran into that trouble this morning. The drivers side was a
pain beacause of the emergency brake assembly. What I did for
both sides was use some stiff 16 awg ground wire and curl the
end in a small circle. After I iserted it into the tube I just
messaged the tube until it made it through. I used eolectrical
tape to tape the speaker wire to the ground wire and then just
pulled it through. It was very easy. I hope this helps. If your
installing some 2way components check out my web page. It
might give you some idea's. I mounted the tweeters flush. It did
involve some drilling with a hole saw.

Message: I want to do this too once some new speakers arrive. I'm looking at it, and cannot figure out what I do with the wires once they get pushed through that rubber tube - without ripping the entire dash off. I've got a '98 regular cab, and I cannot reach the other end of the rubber tube from the inside.
Is there any easy route to getting the wires up to the receiver? Especially for the driver side door?

Message: I'm going to splice my amp wiring to the factory wiring in the dash. Most shops do that anyway unless you specify new wiring. My door panels are coming off anyway to replace the speakers. Running wire for door speakers is very frustrating.

Message: I know first hand how much a difference better wires gives you, in my '87 Dakota one of the rear speakers started sounding terrible & I replaced the wiring to that one only then to then find out the cheap speaker was blown (Blaupunkt brand). Well, soon later I replaced all 4 with Infinity speakers and I must say, that one speaker I ran new wiring too was so much louder than the other 3 & the only speaker to have such prominent bass output.
It is worth it to replace the wires.
What I ended up doing on the '98 was making a cut in the rubber housing on the door side just large enough so the cable could poke through that. On the passenger side the wire comes into the cab along with the antennae cable. On the driver side the wire I cut a hole in the door trim and the wire comes around then goes behind the kick panel. That rubber trim already has many holes on purpose, one more is not going to make a difference.
This way it's not that tough to get new wires to the door speakers, and only time will tell how well the wire housing will hold up (I bought monster cables with the black housing). I don't imagine much water really gets down there when the doors are closed.

Message: I admit getting the new speaker wire to the HU on the drivers
side was a pain. Somehow I managed to get the wires above the
steering column. It's not as hard as it sounds. You need to tape
the ends together (drivers side front and rear) to make it stiff
enough. It involved several minutes in a very very uncomfortable
position. Once your hand is up there (in my truck at least) you
can only move your fingers and even then just a little. On the
passenger side I just came out from the top of the kick panel
and zip tied them to the antenna cable below the glove box.
Very neat and tidy. I used 16 awg RCA speaker wire I got from
home depot.
