Subject: Secure the amp IP: Logged
Message: What's the best way to secure my amp underneath the passenger seat? Should I cut out a the carpet around it? Should I just buy some kind of screw and drive it through the carpet?
Any advice?

Message: Jason, place the amp where it's going to be screwed down and punch through the carpet and metal floor with an "ice pick", then screw this corner down loosely. Do the same with the other corners of the amp and then tighten the all the screws down.
An ice pick works great since it makes a small hole in the metal and has a small enough shaft to get through the amp mounting holes.

Message: never EVER bolt an amp to bare metal....it will cause ground looping problems, and could lead IC output failure in the long run.....

Message: That is true. I went to True Value and bought some nylon washers and used those to isolate the amp from the metal floor and mounting screws. they are extremely cheap too.

Message: guess I can see your point, if the: amp(s), stereo, EQ, changer, etc are not grounded to a low resistance "common" ground it could induce noise and damage to the amp. If the amps ground wire and amp's chassis is grounded seperate from the the other audio equipment with a poor quality ground the difference in ground potantial of the amp mounting location and all the other ground locations could cause a ground loop.
Guess I have never run into this since I always run to a common ground point on the frame. Heck, I have never seen an amp come with isolation washers to keep the amp from making contact with the vehicles chassis. I don't think I can remember an amp that had mounting holes large enough to use isolation washers and fit a diecient size screw through the hole after using isolation washers, the kind cupped to rest inside the mounting scres hole.
If you have a low resistance common ground to all the audio gear, how is grounding the amp's chassis going induce a ground loop since the amp's chassis is tied to the amp's ground wire? Only way I way I could see a probelm is if the amp's chassis is not grounded to the amp's ground wire.
