Subject: Where to run wires in the cabin IP: Logged
Message: I have a '01 QC that I will be running an amp to the back.
I was thinking of under the back seats but after looking at it,
there isn't much room at all there. Has anyone else installed it
under the seat without much trouble of heat or anything else? Or
should I just move it under the passenger or driver seat?
When it comes to the wiring though,... I'm going to take
advantage of the information available on the site and run the
power cable through the firewall on the gromet for the
emergency brake. But, I don't won't to rip out and put back in
anything I don't have to on the interior. Since I am not a
professional, I doubt I could get everything back into place as
well as it was in there originally. What's the easiest / best way to
run the wiring to get to the amp back there? Should I be pulling
off the plastics pieces on the bottom of the door sill and running
under there? Should I be running under the center console?
Any suggestions would help as well as any information to about
the "gotchas" and tricks to make those suggestions work. I don't
want to trash my interior just to run a sub into the back.
Thanks!

Message: Great post! Here is your solution:
If you are running a sub amp then it is possible to run all of your wires together i.e. power, rca, and remote. If you're running wires for your front speakers then you need to separate your power wire from your rca cables so you don't pick up any engine noise(run your power wire down one side and your rca's down the other). The best place to put your amp is under the drivers or passenger side seat. I know you don't want to remove anything you don't have to but you'll be very happy you did when you're finished. You can just remove your door sill and go that rout but securing your amp will be hard if the seat is not removed. Also make sure you don't run your rca's next to any computers in the truck, that will induce noise as well. When grounding your amp make sure the wire is less than a foot and scrape away any paint to get a good ground. With stereo systems hiding everything will be a great theft deterrent as well as a clean install. Good luck!

Message: I got my amp underneath the driver's seat, I had it professionally done since I was too lazy to do it at the time and I got it done cheap since I know the guy's bro. I say put it under the seat, it's hidden that way and hard to get at. From what I understand, when running wiring for the subs, you STILL have to keep the power and RCAs seperate or risk noise problems. Pop out your door sills carefully (not hard) and run the wiring under them, or if you can get them up under the carpet a lil bit thats good too. Loosen any plastic covers and whatnot that you'd have to go through (not sure with the quad) and tuck the wires up underneath them so they're hidden and it gives it a nice clean look. Not sure how they grounded my amp, but I'm figuring you can ground it on the bolts that hold the seat down.

Message: Like I said it's POSSIBLE to run the wires together, would I do it in my truck? No. Also, don't use the seat bolt to ground your amp, it's hoak.

Message: I have my door speaker amp under the passenger seat and my sub amp under the rear driver's side seat. I placed the sub amp there with the intention of moving it behind the rear seats if it was necessary. It has not been necessary to move it, as yet. It all depends on the amp, it's heat dissipation, it's heat tolerance, and your need to crank the crap out of it...
Definitely run the power on 1 side and the RCAs on the other. It might not be probelmatic, but if it is, do you really want to re-run the wires?
The plastic door sill plates come up easily, as stated above, so routing the wires isn't too bad at all. Plan the wiring routes beforehand (don't forget the power-on wire for the amp(s)), make sure to plan enough time to do it right, and it all should come out OK.

Message: Yea I wasn't sure where they ground my amp at, I just remember grounding it in my Bronco II to one of the bolts in my rear seat.

Message: You might get away with grounding the amp to a seat bolt, but you should ground the amp to the frame or battery. If you ground to a seat bolt you are relying on the factory chassis to frame grounds which are designed for the stock equipment, not the addition of an aftermarket amp which can draw a lot of current.
I grounded all my amps, CD changer and stereo to an unused hole in the frame below the drivers seat. Then for an added measure of security I ran an 8 ga wire from the common ground location to the battery. No noise and no worries about having a poor ground.
