Message: numbers numbers...it's alot simpler than all this. let's take two 10's and one 12 of the same exact brand and type. 2 10's = more sound pressure which = harder hit. one 12 = less space taken up and is usually a little bit more versatile. one thing noone mentioned anything about (oddly enough) is that brand of amp and brand of head unit make a huge difference as far as how any given subs will sound. the better your head unit is for example, the more versatile it will generally be (ie having built-in electronic crossovers, having a dedicated subwoofer amp channel, etc), and so the end result (the way the subs sound) will be better...in some cases much better. higher output voltage is a big plus too. u can have the best subs in the world and still manage to make them sound like complete crap with the wrong amp/head unit. conversely, u can have low-end piece-of-crap subs and actually make them sound decent if u have decent equipment behind them. i'm using a Panasonic head unit with all kinds of crossovers and eq curves and other customizable options running to an alpine amp and two infinity 1230w's and they don't sound crappy at all. and this isn't a plug for my particular system, but instead it is to say that with good equipment u could run 2 10's or one 12 and probably be happy either way because u will have enough options available to u with better equipment that u could tweak either set-up to sound how u wanted. later. P.S. RF is over-rated kiddos.

Message: you're partly right. Two 10" speakers in the same cabinet (internal volume) as a single 12" speaker driven by the same amp will likely produce more SPL, but will not produce lower frequency. The 12" will allways 'hit' lower notes with more SPL than those 10s in the same cabinet volume. Given that they are from the same maker and the same 'line' of speaker, eg: Infinity Kappas.
