Subject: Aftermarket Stereo ? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '03 Dak QC that I purchased last year and would like to change out the stereo, and possibly hook up a set of comps and an amp.
My question is, does any of that void the truck warranty? Also, does it negatively effect resale/trade-in value?
Plan on calling the dealer to verify as well but wanted to hear from anyone out there that has had this qeustion already answered for them.
Thanks a lot

Technically no. the dealer/Chrysler can only void warranty coverage on a repair if they can prove that your modifications caused the problem. So if, say, you blow out a brake caliper seal, they can't claim that your warranty is void because you installed an aftermarket radio.
Also, does it negatively effect resale/trade-in value?
It can, especially if you cut up trim panels and sheet metal. If you just install a radio and speakers you should be fine. My rule of thumb is not to do anything irreversible. Don't cut wire harnesses, don't hack up structures. Trim can be replaced when it's time to sell the truck.

I wouldn't do that. You just give them ammo if they want to give you a hard time on a warranty repair. Dealers get paid less for warranty repairs, so they often try to weasel out of it.

Message: Thanks for the reply Jim. I figured the warranty could only be voided if the aftermarket product caused the problem but just wanted to confirm.
I probably wouldn't do the install myself so i woudl have to rely on a shop to not do any cutting of harnesses and what not. Just to be safe, I will probably go with a pair of quality coax's rather than mess with the doors and amp them possibly.
Where would someone suggest putting the amp in a QC that doesn't mess with anything?

Message: I bought a Kenwood 5025 cd deck for my 2000 Dakota, installed myself with 4 6" triaxes, the car shop you go to should have a wiring harness kit, and an adapter kit for the truck cost me 15 for each and its all plug in after you connect the stereo wiring to the wiring kit.
