Subject: Info on amps and subs..pls help IP: Logged
Message: Bear with me here I'm very new at understanding audio equipment. I have an 88 dakota, I found some new speakers that I want to put in it and I have no trouble doing any of that. I also want a subwoofer, I found a 700 watt sub for 40$(I'm 16 and don't have loads of cash so I dont care if its a cheap one). If I'm not mistaken I need an amp to power my subwoofer is that correct? If so then how powerfull an amp would I need to power 2 180 watt speakers and a 700 watt sub. Also if I did get all of this where would I put the amp and sub??

Message: Yes, you will need an amp for the sub but not necessarily for the speakers. If you have a head unit with an internal amp built in, then that can power your speakers, but not with too many watts.
If you want an external amp for your speakers then you can get a 2 or 4 channel amp (depending on the amount of speakers) to power them. Then you can get a mono class D amp to power your sub. Is your Dak en ext cab? I think when you say "700 watts" that you are talking about the peak power of the sub, therefore you will need an amp that puts no more than 700 watts.
