Message: It is to be set according to the pre-amp voltage of the head unit and the Ohm load that it "sees".

Message: I'v heard the best way to set the gains is to....
1- Turn down the gain(s) all the way.
2- Turn the stereo up to 3/4 volume.
3- Turn up the gain(s) slowly to your liking or to the point where the speakers distort/sound bad.
This will allow you to turn it up a little more for songs with low volume and besides your deck is probably starting to distort past 3/4 volume. Why amplify noise?
