Subject: Aftermarket head unit installation IP: Logged
Message: Hey,
I installed an Aiwa CDC-MP3 in my '01 QC (without an Infinity system) with a Crutchfield wiring harness. After I hooked it up, I noticed that I could turn on my new head unit with the ignition in the OFF position! Well, after much troubleshooting, I discovered that the ignition wire still carries 7 volts when the truck is off. I fixed the problem by hooking the ignition wire from the Aiwa to a circuit in the truck that turns off when the key is off.
My question is has anyone else experienced this? I searched the entire audio section but didn't see anything relating to this "problem" I received my Dakota July 31, 2000 so it was one of the first 2001s made.

Message: did you check to see if the harness was put together correctly? (does crutchfield do this for you?) There should be two wires that carry voltage to the head unit, one is used to power the stereo and is on all the time so memory settings arent lost, the other is a "turn on" wire that only carries current when the key is turned, so the stereo knows when it should be on. if this wire is hooked into the constant power wire, then you would be experiencing the problem you mentioned, it would always turn on. If the original stereo didnt have the problem, it is a problem in the harness or the new head unit, not the truck.

Message: Hey again,
It is a problem with the truck because I put my meter on the ignition wire in the TRUCK's stereo wiring harness and it was giving me 7 volts when the ignition was turned off. The crutchfield harness wasn't even in the picture (nor was the head unit) when I checked the ignigtion wire voltage.

Message: Not to split hairs here, but are you sure that you check the ignition wire and not the bat(or always on wire)?...
Okay I am not trying to be rude but you may want to check both of the wires or even more check all the wires because if you stock stereo wouldn't work with the ignition off then the wires must be right somehow.
On the other side it's fixed, may I ask what wire you used instead? Also you might want to add a separate fuse to that line or increase the fuse by 5 or 10 if it's shared with something else that you will use regualarly. IE reverse lights only work the the ignition on and are often used. They use their amps and if you add a drain on to that you may blow the fuse quickly.
Well jsut things to consider I hope all goes well.

Message: Hey Casey, I had a similar problem in my 2001 Dakota. When I got my Nakimichi installed at my local stereo shop the power could be turned on with the key in the off posistion. What we had to do is run the 12V accs. wire directly to the ignition switch.
When I got home I took some measurements and found that the 12V accs. line would only drop from 12V to about 11V when the key was put in the off posistion.
I'm not sure if this is a bug in some of the early 2001 trucks(I got mine in Oct 2000)or does Dodge have a stange wiring scheme in their trucks.
I'm glad you brought this up because I thought I was the only person with this problem.
Thanks

Message: i have the same aiwa MP3 head unit and i had the same problem after it was installed at the stereo shop. it turns out the remote for the head unit was hooked up to the constant + wire of the truck. this was not good because the head unit would turn on before the amps ( the amp remotes were wired correctly ) and i would get the 'pop' when everything powered up. i found the correct wire using a test light and spliced the head unit remote into the correct "switched" + and now everything works correctly. i wish the installers at the stereo store had done it right the first time. i guess thats what you get for "free installation with purchase".

Message: Okay gang, here goes...
(The pics in this post will open in a new window)
First off, I am glad so many people have responded. This is a great forum. I will continue to browse and respond.
Secondly, I am glad someone else had this problem and had to run a wire directly from the 12v accessory switch. This verifies that there is perhaps a problem with the wiring in early 2001 dakota pickups.
Now, to help show the problem, I have take my dash apart again and snapped a few pics.
Thanks to mytruckrock's url to the wire colors in a 2001 dakota, we know that the "switched" wire is the red/white wire. This picture of my wiring harness shows that the red/white wire is the second wire from the left (between the pink and orange wires) on the grey wiring harness. This verifies that I am in fact messing with the correct wire.
Next, you see a pic of the same wiring harness (with the crutchfield supplied harness removed) with my meter plugged directly into the second position of the truck's harness. Points of interest will be to note that the meter reads "11.81" volts and also that the ignition is in the off position (heck, my keys aren't even in!) Here is another pic taken 20 minutes later. The voltage still reads "11.80"
Now, to answer NiPs question as to how I "fixed" the problem. I took a fused length of wire and inserted it in the fused side of the fuse in position 22 in the fuse block. This fuse is for the "Heated Seats" which my truck does not have installed. There is a 10amp fuse in the wire and it has worked fine for over a year and a half. The only drawback is my stereo will not come on when the key is in the "ACCESSORY" position, only in the "ON" position.
Thanks for listening. If you have experienced this, let me know. That way I will know that I am not alone.

Message: I’m going through this same issue. Three different radios three
different ready harness all the same problem. This is the first post
on any forum that mentions the 7volt coming through. This seems
to be an issue that multiple people are having.
