Subject: Another QC sub option IP: Logged
Message: I just installed a single 10" sub and amp in my 2003 Quad Cab without losing any seating space, center console space, or the ability to fold rear seats up. Even better, it's a sleeper system, since it's barely visible and uses the factory head unit. If you're familiar with QC's, you're probably thinking I'm lying, 'cause there ain't no place like that in a Quad Cab. But there is, just take a look inside the rear doors. Behind the plastic door panel, towards the lower rear of the door (not the lower front where the factory speakers are), there is a large cut-out in the sheet metal. With some careful measurement (some woodworking experience helps too), I built a 3" deep, 3/4" thick, plywood extension which allows a 10" speaker to mount in this space. This 3" "collar" is thru-bolted to the door, and allows the sub to use the door interior as a speaker box. The volume is slightly larger than my speaker required, but if it's affecting the sound, I haven't noticed. I did attach vibration dampening material to the inside of the door and blanked off the factory speaker hole. The sub protrudes about an inch and a half past the plastic door panel, but it should be no problem to cover with matching interior material. It really does sound good, and when the door is shut, the sub's grille is barely noticeable below the right rear armrest. If anyone wants to see pics, I'll post.

Message: The interior door panel isn't in place yet, because I've not finished taking measurements on it. I'm putting together detailed plans for building the extension, and a template for locating everything. Where you mount it on the door is fairly critical; you have to clear the window inside the door, and the floor and door on the truck. It took quite a bit of trying to find the right spot on the door, but I couldn't be happier with it now, and I've recieved quite a few positive comments from friends who've seen it. I'll post more pics, when it's complete.
This view shows how much of the sub is visible with the door shut.
This is the view looking down at the sub enclosure with the door shut.

Message: Yes, this is def. a very good option to get a bump in the qc but if you ever plan to sell the car good luck. Unless the person is an audio freek than you will never sell it with 10 inch woofers in the rear doors. And putting them in the eliminates the chance of ever replacing it with the 6.5 door speakers.
just something to think about, but if u are gunna keep the car for the rest of its life, its a big save in space.

Message: PBLRDom, good point, the next owner probably won't want that sub in the rear door, however I didn't cut the door metal to put it in. That huge hole in the rear lower corner of the door was already there, thanks to Dodge! The 6.75" factory speaker was located in the front lower corner, and I removed it and covered that hole with a blank. The factory speaker could go right back where it was. The one thing that has been altered is the plastic door panel. If I had to remove the sub and replace the panel to sell the truck, I'd figure I still spent less than I might have for a custom box, etc. With a smaller extension "collar", I think you could put an 8" sub in each rear door and not have even have to cut a hole in the panel. I like the single 10" though.

Message: Have you had it on yet? I am curious as to how it is going to sound. There are a lot of holes in the door metal frame. Isn't it like having a box with a bunch of holes in it? Just curious.

Message: How's it sound? - It's impressive in my opinion, but I have to qualify that by telling you I don't live to 'bump. I understand the bump addiction, it's just that I'm in my mid-forties and I prefer my tunes only semi-loud, and it's usually Neil Young, Pink Floyd, that kind of thing. That said, the sub really puts out some clean, tight bass, even at fairly loud levels. If I crank up the output too high though, I can get it to distort. That happens at a volume level I couldn't tolerate for long anyway. I know that the door is not an ideal box, and it's definitly "ported" a little too much. I like that location because it keeps the sub somewhat out of view and all the seats and center console remain fully functional. If you decide to put a sub in your door, line the inside with some Dynamat to dampen return vibrations from the sheet metal. To help you gauge what I'm saying, I should tell you that my Quad's audio system currently contains the following components:
-Factory CD/AM/FM stereo head unit (not Infinity)
-Sony 444 amp, with a built-in bridge powering the single sub at 222 watts max, and something like 80 watts RMS. Front speakers get 35 watts RMS each.
-Sony 10" Explode sub (it was cheap, found in the clearance pile at WalMart)
-Alpine 6.5" type S, aluminized, co-ax speakers in front (these are pretty nice)
-14 gauge output wires replaced factory speaker wiring
Oh, and yes you could put a 10" sub in the other door too, if you wanted too.

Message: OK guys, just another option. i designed and built a sealed box to fit between the rear of the console and the front of the back seats. I manufactured a new mounting bracket for the console and had to remove the drink holder from the back fold up seat, but it's clean, great sound and I didn't give up functionality or foot space. If anyone's interested I can give you specs to build your own. I can build and ship, but it would cost you. LOL. Good luck!

Message: Richard, I like your option as well. Is it removable if you need the center seat position in the rear? It seems like a good location sound-wise.
I did some looking around since installing the Sony 10" in my rear door, and I found that Infinity makes some "free air" subs, 10" and larger, that don't require a boxed enclosure. They can work with an enclosure, but they're not dependent on pressure to perform. They look nice too, have aluminum cones. They sound ideal for a door installation. I should've gotten the model#.

Message: you should take a trip to your local audio store in a little while because pioneer is comming out with a 400 watt rms skinny speaker. it is only 4 1/2" deep. it would be ideal for this application and you wouldnt have to cut the door panel. and they sound awesome. (i am a car audio installer and i saw and played with their new models before they came out.)

Any way this configuration is AMAZING I listen to everything Alternative, Country,Classic Rock,Metal,Rap,techno, everything is tight, and crisp and very loud if you so desire
I have got noise violation tickets
Some of the questions people have asked me about my system are
How many 12's do you have in here?
Where are your subs?
Kicker Solobaric is that the square sub
My friend once said to me " You can tell when your system is good when your ears give out before the system distorts"
I am not trying to brag at all but
THIS SYSTEM ROCKS
