Subject: Factory stereo problem IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2001 Dakota. Yesterday for no apparent reason my factory headunit stoped working. It is completly dead, except the lights on the bass and treble knobs are flashing. Has anyone ever seen this before or have any idea of might might have happened? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Message: My friend is having the same problem...be sure to post if you figure it out and I'll do the same if he finds the problem.
Here's what we've figured out so far...It's not the stereo so don't go buy a new one thinking it will fix it. It's either gotta be a fuse (short or something in the box maybe...none of his are blown either), bad ground, or in the radio wiring harness. We swapped my old headunit with his and the problem was still there.

Message: Hello,
I am also a 2001 QC owner and have experienced this problem.
My step dad and i have the same truck, His unit did the same thing. We replaced the oem deck with the exact same 1.5" din unit, and that totaly fixed the problem.
Maybee this happens to people for diff reasons but that fixed ours.
We actually bought 2 of them on ebay one for him and one for me just in case. I have not experienced the issue yet and dont think that i will, i ahve a new unit and all my stuff works great.
if you would like 2 replace the unit i have a factory oem 1.5" din deck thatw ill fit in any 1.5"din opening.
let me know if u want it.

Message: In another forum someone told me that the CPU may need to be reset, and that any local shop can do that. I have no idea what that means, but I am hoping that my B-I-L will. Does this sound familar to anyone?

Message: If it's the PCM... disconnect negative battery cable, turn and hold key in start position for around 30 seconds or so. It will reset EVERYTHING though...so your truck might run a little funny while the computer is relearning. On mine, when it first starts up after a restart, it almost dies while learning the idle and then it runs really rough. I usually start it and let it idle to relearn the idle, shut it off, start it back up again, shut it off, start it and then drive. That way I make sure it's relearned the idle fully. Not sure if you HAVE to do that though. It's just how I do it...

Message: The reset sortof worked for a lttle while. I did the reset, it freaked out( flashing the time and the bass and treble lights) for a few minutes then went completely dead. Then I started it like a couple of hours later and it came back on fine. Then today on my way to work it went back to being dead except for the bass and treble leds
