I'm gonna be looking to get a MP3-CD player for my dak after I sell my Grand Prix (I'm gonna kinda miss it), I've been looking at the Kenwood 8708 (iirc) and it looks good. But I was hoping to get some more accurate advice from someone that knows what they're looking at.

Price Range $300-400
Requirements: Plays MP3-CDs, doesn't look like ass.

I have the Kenwood MP8017 and its great. You can put the names of the groups and the song title and it scrolls across the stereo screen. The more info you put on a CD the less songs it will hold.I put about 150 songs on one 80 min CD.

I already have a portable MP3-CD player and use my MP3-CDs at work. I can fit about 11:45 worth of music average per disk (I try for less than 20MB free, 74 minute disk), which works out to about 180 songs. (The ID3 tags are filled out at the time of ripping the CD)

I just installed a Kenwood Z828 MP3/CD player in my Durango. It's incredible! The Z828 is a step above the MP8017 and performs much better. The MP8017 was last year's model and Kenwood has improved on it. If you have the extra money I'd go with the Z828. It sells for $600 from Crutchfield but you can get it new on ebay around $450.

I have the Rockford Fosgate RFX9000. Great sounding deck. As far as looks...you won't get anyone to say "Holy crap what is that?" but it looks good. Silver with red backlit buttons. Just under $300.

I ended up going for a JVC SH99. It's quite good w/ ID3 tag capability (V1, not V2) and has a brushed aluminum look and feel that doesn't crowd the look with excessive lights. The sound is more than adaquate, but the MP3 format puts a good amount of loss in the sound. So a high end MP3 unit and mid end would probably sound about the same, unlike if they were compared with CD-DA where a difference would be measurable to audiophiles.

i got the aiwa mp3-cd deck and its been good to me so far. you gotta kind of arrange and rename the files before you burn the mp3 cd in order. the file names must begin with "01***.mp2, 02***.mp3, etc" in order to play in order, which may be a drawback for some, but its fine with me becuase my mp3 colleciton is pretty organized. its kinda cool being able to fit 12 cd's worth of songs on one disc. you can find the aiwa for about 250 now which is a killer deal, but keep in mind, it's new relatively new technology and not all mp3 decks will be flawless.

I had an Aiwa Cd MP3 2 in my truck at once, i wouldnt reccomend it to anyone. It skips, and the id3 tag display is weak. Go with the JVC SH99, its the best MP3 player at the price, and it looks better than all. You can get it at www.sounddomain. com for $150 less than crutchfield. Its the best head unit ive ever owned.
