Subject: Is it worth upgrading? IP: Logged
Message: I have an '04 club cab with the infinity speakers. Since it was new, the speakers distort and sound like they are about to blow whenever I try to increase the bass more than halfway. This is at reasonable volumes. Is this common?
Would speakers fix this, or is something else the problem. I thought the infinity speakers would be good, but I am not at all impressed.
TIA,
Simon

Message: That is how my would act in my 2002 with the Infinity system.
Any bass wore than half way and it sounded terrible. I think I ran mine at -3 to -5 and treble at +2 to +4 on most stuff.

Message: If you really want bass there is no substitute for a good sub woofer. You can go with a relatively low output sub and a moderate amp to match your factory system, just make sure you get a good crossover and use "blocking" capacitors on the factory speakers. the cap's keep the really low frequencies from going to your factory gear, preventing that horrible distortion you now hear. As for me i stuck with the basic radio since I knew I would be ripping it all out anyway. My MB Quarts 6.5" Components dont distort at all. I did have to make a hole in the door panel for the tweeters though. Check out the JL Stealthboxes they are really low profile in a Dak.

Message: I have an 04 regular cab with the Infinity speakers, and mine do that too. I haven't bothered upgrading because I'm planning on trading the truck in on an 05 Tacoma, Frontier, or Honda SUT as soon as they come out--just not impressed at all with Dodge quality. Anyway, I've made the best of it by transferring the sound to the rear speakers up to a 4 or 5, keeping the bass no higher than 0, treble at +4. Also, and this is important, I stuffed some dark grey sponges (you can get them at Wal-Mart in the car care aisle--the color is good because it's not too noticable) in the door cargo pockets next to the speakers because they tend to vibrate and buzz and the sponges stop that. I pretty much can't listen to FM at all because the reception is lousy.

Message: Frebius - it has been a long time since I had to buy any, my system has been all custom since 1997.(Eclipse,MbQUart,AudioControl,PPI,JL) Check out your local car audio shop, they should have them there. They were less than $10.00 a piece when I bought them. You will need to match the capacitors to the size of your speakers and the desired rolloff level. The caps just mount in line with your speaker wire. If your local shop dosen't carry them google around a bit, there are tons of formula's and info on the net. like I said I am pretty rusty onthese but I'll see what i can come up with.

This will help explain the poor sound quality you are hearing : http://www.clubknowledge.com/Car_Audio_FAQ/?t20
Also search the boards on this site, I am sure someone has done this on these trucks.

Message: Frebuis, make sure you get caps that roll off the the correct frequency for a 2 ohm speaker, not a 4 ohm speaker. Your stock Infinity speakers are 2 ohm.
Check out this site for Xover calculators........
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/customcarstereo/calc_cr.html
1000 uf cap will roll off at 80hz with a 2 ohm load
800 uf cap will roll off at 100hz
680 uf cap will roll off at 120hz
If you want a steeper (better) Xover go with a 12db Xover, cap and coil. The 12db Xover will not only block the lows, but dump the lows that get past the cap to ground. Don't run down to Radio Shack and get the caps, you need non-polorized audio grade caps from a good stereo or speaker shop.
