Subject: Dash lights and HU heating up
IP: Logged

Message:
I just recently installed a Pioneer DEH-P3600 in a 99 Dak. Nice unit, but after driving around for about 10-20 minuets, my unit starts heating up, to the point where it almost burns. I also noticed that my controls for my lights heat up as well. In particular around the dial to turn up and down the brightness of the lights.

I have already made sure I have a deffinate ground connection. I have the factory ground wire crimped to the harness ground, as of right now. Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

- Mikel

Did you use a Wire Harness to hook it up to factory wiring or did you tap the power wire into something else.

I have a JVC H/U and it heats up extremely hot after a bit also... the cds come out very hot sometimes. I only use burned cds in my vehicle so im not that concerned about it damaging them. I dont have the light control problem though...are you sure you didnt connect the power wire to the dimmer control possibly. Or to the remote wire. Those arent made to handle the higher loads as the 12v source wire.

Otherwise ive just figured it was normal as the H/u is much more powerful and in a more compact case.

I used a wiring harness kit on my HU. So I know I have everything wired up correctly. As far as the 12V source getting mixed up; if I had done that, my HU would of burnt out shortly after turning the truck on, from what I understand about the wiring setup.

And HU's are not supposed to heat up much past room temp, so you better start looking into your's as well. Because I would be more worried about ruining the HU.

have u thought about your heater and a/c vent tube that sit 2" above the HU. even w/the trucks a/c panel to off heat still does come out, the plastic heats up stays in the small compartment where the HU stays. mines does the same thing and the cds do come out hot and ive got the panasonic HU. and as for the light switch, if u have the fog light package from the factory then its the same as mine you turn the parking lights on and pull the switch to turn the fog lights on. the reason it gets hot is the switch has a built in relay to handle the power load of the fog lights and of course a relay will put off heat and the is no where for it to go there very normal.

Thank you Todd. Kept me from doing extra labour. Heh. I was just about to run a seperate ground wire from the body to the HU to make sure it was not a lack of a good ground connection. and re-crimp all my wires with gold plated crimps (which I will probably still do, just later when I wire in my new 4 inch speakers.)

Thanks for the help.

first of all the HU should not be getting that hot at all. Yes your CD's will come out hot since they are spinning at like 5000 RPM or so but the HU should no get too hot. I am sorry that I do not a solution for you problem but I think that you need to figure out why it is getting so hot though.

And second why 4" speakers? sorry had to ask

I have an automatic, and the transmission hump was way to open for my liking, so I figured I would build a custom box and put some speakers there. And I did not want something too big to get in the way of my driving, so I choose 4 inch speakers. With the design of the box, it fits perfect.

All powered head units get hot. High-power 4-channel power amp + small heatsink means damned-hot radio. Plus, the DSP and main micro get pretty warm too.

Yes your CD's will come out hot since they are spinning at like 5000 RPM

An audio CD in a standard player doesn't spin nearly that fast. At the inner tracks it'll spin at about 500 rpm, and 200 rpm at the outer tracks.

I would check the dimmer wire that ran to the factory radio and be sure that it is not hooked up wrong to your new unit. This could be causing the heat problem at your light switch if it is putting to much of a load on the dimmer circuit.

You should be able to disconnect this wire all together and the check to see if the heat problem goes away. The dimmer wire is usually orange in color.
