hello guys and gals,
Here is my problem: my stock cassette player broke in my 97 ext. cab and i am looking to replace it with somthing equal or better in quality and sound output. i don't know much about cd players, besides the basics.
so when i was at walmart one day i looked at there cd players and they had a sony i think it was a model # sw200 but it was a 208 watt and was 120. bucks. would this be better than the stocker?
and what kinda power output do the stockers have?
thanks

Yes the sony would be better than stock. The sony probably puts out about 18-25 watts RMS and the stock i believe is only about 8-10 watts.

In my opinion a better bet than the sony would be a Pioneer Cd deck..the low models start right about $109 i think and they have several in the $100-160 range. These are better than the newer sonys in my opinion. Try looking at Crutchfield.com, etronics.com, or best buy if you have to.

Crutchfield is nice, while slightly higher in price on some items. They include all mounting brackets, wire harnesses, and vehicle specific instructions on installing your item for free. Their tech support are real american people that seem to know their stuff too!

I had Pioneer speakers in my Bronco II. They sounded nice. If you want to get a good set of speakers, I'd check out one of your local shops. You might pay more, but you'll get quality stuff. Components are nice b/c u get the woofer and tweeter seperate, but they're more expensive. What Walmart speakers were u looking at? I had replacement Pioneers in the rear of my Bronc, and put some blue ones in the front. They were good.

I wouldnt waste the time or money. I got some Sony Xplode speakers from walmart...worst speakers ive ever heard ...well almost. Luckily walmart takes anything back.

Do yourself a favor and look at Infinity Reference or Kappa Series speakers. Theyre only about $60-90 on ebay new in box. I have Kappas in my Durango and they sound great.

I've got a bronco II, took out all of the old sound system, and used Polk momo speakers, exelent mid-highs 90 to 100$ on Ebay. but I went more for the extreme and using external amps to my cd player, and added 4, 12" subs in the back, no room left. only spent about $1500 on the entire system. can almost compete in compitions
both SPL and SQL.

Hey Levey, I got Sony Xplods in my doors. Along with the Rockford Fosgates behind the seats and the JVC CD player I put in sounds good. I like the Sony Xplods. What didn't you like about them? Good solid bass and overall clear sound from mine.

The Sony Xplodes were very tinny sounding to me, very shrill. The "s"'s seemed to slur you know, like on bad TV speakers.. Also i just think the overall clarity wasn't there. The bass was pretty good..but i dont want/need that. I have a sub to handle that part. I dont know, its possible i just got a bad set...or maybe a set that had already been returned before.

Ive just generally not seen good things when it comes to the sony products. The original sony stuff was great. I hear the MOST recent stuff is better as well. But for awile there (late 90s-2004 or so) i saw nothing but problems or substandard products. (overrated amps, fried amps, malfunctioning cdplayers, bad sounding speakers that look good and blow easily, etc.)
