Subject: Are We All Going Deaf? IP: Logged
Message: Hey,
I have a 94 reg cab with rockford fosgate 8" he2 sub and 201s amp behind seat. Anyways, I was just wondering how loud you guys turn up your music. I have to drive my younger brother to high school everyday, which is a pain in the ass, because hes always holding me up- always waiting for him to get in the truck in the morning, and after school, am in the truck, have to wait 1-3 minutes for his SLOOOOW ass. plus, he always complains when i put the volume up, mainly just the bass, so i cant have the bass level (on sony mp3 deck)- on 3 out of 3- have to have it 2, because my brother is a wussy. anyways, if i turn off the bass- put it to 0, the music is actually really soft, relatively soft, so if i put the bass on 1, i can put the volume a little higher and my brother wont mind, but i like having that bass hit deep and tight, not weak bass at 1. anyways, this really bugs me, and we're constantly "fighting" over the volume and bass level.
when i turn my truck back on, on the way back home, when i first turn it on and the music comes on, i realize that it is fairly loud, and sometimes even have to turn it down. but i'd still say that i play my music fairly loud, but now REALLY loud, because if i turn the bass off, the front 5.25 speakers are weak. anyways, are we all turning ourselves deaf?
I think like if i had a SUV or a car where the sub isnt right behind you and blasting right into your ear, then my brother wouldnt mind, but he does in my truck. i think having a regular cab, and having all the music coming directly at you is bad, in terms of a healthy sound "environment"- it would be better for your ears to have a car where your 6X9 or rear speakers are way back behind you and your subs are in the trunk, so you can really put the volume up, at least more so than in a truck.
anyways, thats my rambling, and im not sure i made any coherent statements or arguments.
but just wanting to hear your comments..

Message: I do think that by playing your car stereo that loud, you are going to damage your hearing. If I can clearly hear your music in my car 1/2 a block away, it is too loud. Now before you decide I am some old fogy (actually I am), it IS your hearing you are damaging, not mine. So if you want to be partially deaf by the time you graduate, it is your choice.
On the other hand, your little brother is most likely trying to tick you off (and succeeding, it sounds like). So find some music he really likes and start playing it LOUD, but then as soon as he starts getting into it, turn it way down, telling him you want to protect his hearing...
Sibling rivalry is SO fun (I have a younger brother...).

Message: Ha,
If only my brother LIKED any music, hes just so indifferent when it comes to music. You play rap with cool beats, doesnt like heavy hitting bass and cuss words, play R&B, isnt really into it, complains if melody repeats (as almost always in almost every song), play rock, doesnt like anything for that matter..he just soo annoying. i constantly tell him to take the bus if hes so uncomfortable with me driving- although i do drive semi-aggressively, im not like the out-of-control 95mph on 65 driver, i usually go only 5-10 over, not 20- i know my limits, per se. anyways, he makes such a big deal over everything i do, he pretends that i DONT know how fast im going, which is ridiculous, because when i learned how to drive, my dad always kept telling me constantly, like every 15 seconds, to check speedometer, mirrors, etc. so for that matter i consider myself a good driver, and i aced my driving test to get my license.
anyways, my brother has ZERO cds. hes just boring and unopinionated. you ask him about something and he literally is indifferent and cant take a stance or support his opinion. oh if he only had a brain.. (jk, but he is much dumber than my sister and me-not exaggerating, he struggles in school to get B's, whereas my sister and i have always been straight A students (i have a 4.0 as of now, my sister graduated with 3.92- although im worried about one class one right now, i need to get an A on my final..) isnt school fun?

Message: Sounds like sibling rivalry. I would say, be nice to him as he seems to be the one with problems. If you can help him out, do so, but try to be subtle about it. I don't think he would accept direct help. He will always be your bro, and when you are both adults, he MIGHT even thank you for the help.
Back to the original question. Constant exposure to very loud music WILL damage your hearing. Occasional loud music IS fun (I've tripped a few breakers at home and in my truck), but if you always have to shout over it to be heard, then it is too loud. Play one or two songs loud and keep the rest at a reasonable volume (for example, I always crank up Slow Jam by New Order). I had to take a hearing test to get my current job (not sure why, but...) and I barely passed it. I was told I'd been to too many rock concerts (I did go to quite a few over the years). It's your hearing, take care of it.

Message: You only got two ears... so boom responsible.
I stopped going with huge systems several years ago, after SIX 10"s and 900 watts in Prelude I realized just how silly it was. A small system with good sound quaility is the way to go.
The fact that when you get back in your truck you realize how loud it was (or is) gives you a clue. It's temporary hearing damaging that is occuring, over time that damage will become permenant :( once you get older it will be hearing aid time for sure. If possible have you system tested with a dB meter and see what your hitting, then check the recommend levels with a doctor. Two 8"s should not be too bad, but over time it can still cause damage. Better safe then sorry right?

Message: You're only running 1-8" Rockford? That shouldn't be all that loud. Yes, it should sound pretty sweet but as for loud, I can't see it being all that loud. But yea, most likely you are damaging your hearing. I got 2-10" subs in my extended cab, and believe me it pounds to the point where I can't hear anything around me. Probably not a good thing for my ears but I like it that way. If your bro doesn't like it and it annoys you that he's like that, I'd suggest making the lil prick take the bus or walk his ass to school. Look at it this way, it's your truck, so it's pretty much your way or the highway. Nice thing to do is to find a level thats loud enough for you and not too loud for him. I take my nephew to school, and generally I don't have any music on til he gets outta my truck, just b/c he's not into the music I'm into. Doesn't bother me tho, it's only 10 min to his school, then I got a 20 min drive to college after that. Basically, you can either be nice, compromise and find a suitable level you both can enjoy, or you can be an a**hole and tell your bro to f*ck off, haha. If he's that annoying and making you late, I'd say let him take the bus.
