Subject: QUAD CAB SUB BOX
IP: Logged

Message:
I have found a place that is building me a custom sealed subwoofer box capable of housing two 10 Inch subwoofers that will fit behind the rear seats of a quad cab Dakota. I have the exact measurements and will have a detailed description of how the box fits, performs, and any room for improvements soon. I will be building a website in time with pics and detailed descriptions of the process from start to finish while putting in my 6 speaker+2 amps+subwoofer box stereo. Be looking for my new posts soon. Please E-mail with requests for the plans for the Subwoofer enclosure as I hope to complete my cad drawing soon. Eternalodyssey@hotmail.com

I just bought a custom sub box on Ebay that replaces the center front seat in the 40/20/40 seats. The sellers id is HOTBOXES. I had him also put in a 8' JL Audio sub. The box looks great and is built very well. It has OEM material so it matches perfect. This guy is very friendly and great to deal with

My sub box is getting built right now and should be finished by Monday
or Tuesday of nex week, (3-4 May). Its a bit difficult to explain but there
were a lot of measurements that had to be taken a couple things you have to
take into consideration. First, the material behind the seats has to be
removed and cut just below the carpet. The rubber that you cut away gives
you an extra inch or so of room to work with. Second, the seats of course,
must be completely removed to get the box in which makes it a whole lot harder
to steal the box once its in. Third, after you remove the material behind
the seats, you'll replace the top carpet part which will be held by the side
plastic molding peices as well as the three bolts for the baby seat straps.
The box itself has a hump in a specific place to accomodate for the two
middle brackets for the seats. I have encountered a slight problem in my
plan in that I will only be able to get three bolts onto each rear seat. The
two remaing bolts I cannot get to because the seats will no longer go up far
enough for me to get my hands on the bolts. I honestly think the seats will be
allright because they have three bolts as well as the clip behind the seats
which holds the seats onto the rear wall when you lift the seats up.
I am getting the box built by a good friend of mine that works at a
place called custom stereo sounds and he is doing it as a side job for only
$100. For this box you are probably looking at around double that unless you
know someone. It may be more or it may be less. My suggestion is that you
take the plans I will send you when the box is finished and shop around a
bit. Or you could even try to make it yourself. I am really pleased that I
will be able to helo other people out when I send out the plans drawn up. I
am having no luck with my CAD program right now so I may just end up
E-mailing a very crude drawing taken with a digital camera.
I will also have photos posted on the website I will be building in
about a month with a list of all the custom work I am having done to my Quad
cab.
I'll keep posting on the forum until the plans or a photo is completely
finished and I'll send out the plans to everyone that requests them
massmail. Till then , take care and keep your eyes on the forum. Laters.

Why is it that every time someone post something about having a great solution to putting subs in a quad cab behind the rear seat, they always disappear? I have seen several people state this and say they are going to post pictures or plans on the board, and then they are never heard from again. Is there some kind of conspiracy to keep the quad cabs down, where someone is putting a hit out on anyone who may have come up with a good solution?

BTW, I already have a t-form in my quad cab, and I have bucket seats so I'm not getting rid of my console. I would like to have a better system, and would prefer to cram some better 10's than mtx behind the rear seats if possible. I only say this because usually someone post that you can replace the center console with a sub box as a solution to putting 10's behind the rear seat, but that doesn't really help me solve my problem.

blkquad, did your Quad Cab come with rear buckets or is that custom???

I've got the 60/40 rear seats. I modified one of them to get a 10 inch Rockford Fozgate behind it (the larger passenger side).

Here's some pics of mine. I too had to remove some of the material behind the seat. I also had to modifiy the seat to move forward 1.5 inches. I also modified the rear lateches behind both seats so I can now lift up on the bottom and fold the tops down to access the sub and amp.

That's a 1 cubic foot ported box. Since the 10" HE blew for the 3rd time (under warranty still) they no longer had that exact one and I got a new P2 or whatever it is called. The replacement speaker sounded horrible when I first dropped in into the box. So I realized the port specs and box size were diff so I cut my port down to the specs of the P2 sub. Now I think I will biuld a new box. The sealed enclosure only requires .65 cu feet while the ported spec wants 1.25 to be tuned properly.

I'll post the new box when I finish it. I also may go with two subs some day and move my amp somewhere else. Under the front seat? hmm...

The kids still fit fine and it's a little tighter for an adult but the front passenger can just move their seat forward a little and it's fine.
Oh yeah. I had to use my welder and cutting wheel a little to mod the seats :P

I've got more info on my site if you click on my banner at the signature.

This is exactly what I want, but I don't want to have to move the seat. My main concern would be the mounting depth of the subwoofer. GraphiteDak, do you think there would have been enough room to do what you did without moving the seat if you built the box out of fiberglass instead of wood?

Fiberglass???
Wouldn't that flex like a mother f---?

With the current box. No way in hell it would fit.

But. As I said I plan on building a .75 cu foot SEALED box to replace my 1 cu foot ported box real soon. Maybe tomarrow if I get time.

As ALWAYS. I will take pictures and post them on my site with links here.

Yeah. His box is custom. That's about what you would have to do to get TWO subs back there. Probably pounds nicely too.
But, I have TWO KIDS that sit back there and no way in heck I want my speakers there for them to touch or for people to SEE and STEAL! I do like mine hidden behind the seat. You can;t tell it's there.

Today I removed my ported 1 cu foot box and installed a slightly smaller one that is a sealed .75 cu foot box which is to specs for my new Fockford Fozgate P2 that replaced my recently blown HE series (that they no longer make). Damn thing. The speaker blows, again and this time they have to give me a diff one with diff specs. When I dropped the new P2 in my ported box it sounded crummy.
I took pics of the new box today, but will have to post them later.

HELLO I OWN A 2001 DOKATA QUAD CAN AND I HAVE 1 10" KICKER COMP VR IN A CUSTOME BOX THAT IS FIXED IN THE REAR OF MY CAR DIRECTLY INBETWEEN THE CENTER ARM REST THAT FOLDES UP AND THE REAR SEATS. IT IS FLUSH WITH THE SEATS. I HAVE HEARD SO MANY PEOPLE SAYING THAT THEY CAN DO THIS DESIGN BEHIND THE REAR SEATS, BUT UNLESS YOU MOVE THE SEATS FORWARD ALMOST ELIMINATING ALL LEG ROOM IN THE REAR IT CANT BE DONE, END EVEN THEN IT IS A PAIN IN THE A** BECAUSE YOU BASICLALLY ELLIMINATE THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE QUAD CAB TO MAKE BUMP IN THE TRUCK. ALSO THE MTX FORMS ARE CRAP IN MY OPINION. IT COMPLETELY DESTROYS THE PURPOSE BECAUSE YOU CANT USE THE DRIVER SIDE REAR SEAT ANY LONGER.

I've also been in the "quad-sub quandry" and I've come up with a solution. My goal is a hidden or barely visible system, and no loss of seating space, or seat-folding capability. We all know that's a tall order in a QC, however there's space available in the rear doors. I need a little over a cubic foot for my 10" speaker, and the rear door, by my calculation, has a bit more space than that. If need be, I'll find a more suitable speaker. The bigger obstacle is the depth required for the speaker, and the exact location for it in the door. What I've found is that the door has a large cutout behind the plastic panel in the lower rear (note that the factory rear speakers are in the lower front). I constructed a 10" round, 3" deep extension that bolts up to the door, over this cutout. It provides a mounting surface for the sub, and allows the magnet to clear the window when it is down. The extension is made of 3/4" cabinet grade ply, and it is thru-bolted to the door with four 5/16" carriage bolts. With the speaker in place and the door shut, the speaker almost touches part of the lower rear seat, but it is completely out of the way, and safe from kicks, etc. With the plastic door panel on, the speaker extension sticks out about an inch and a half past the panel. I'm using black carpet that matches the truck's carpet around the extension, and a low-profile grille to cover the speaker opening. The inside of the door will get plenty Dynamat to nix the sheet metal rattle. It's not finished yet (you've heard that before, right?), but it won't be long. The trial and error fitting, and the extension itself are complete now. If anyone's interested, I'll let you know how it sounds when complete.

Yes you say that you have 2 12" behind your seat, i dont mean to be a burden but as soon as some one sits back hard if you do have them there the coil will hit the magnet and they will die on you.
Besides the actual area that is total behind the seats is hardly enough cubic inches that are optimal for 1 10" sub. That may also be another reason that your qc isnt hitting hard.
