Message: Steve: I have two JL 10w1's in a sealed box, run by a Ref 300 Soundstream amp that will work at 1/2 ohm stable. How much air space do you have for each sub? Do you think there is a diff. in sound quality because of the shape, not because of the speaker brand?

Message: The solobarics have a much better SPL than any other sub. There SQ is not always the best, but I love my S15L7. But the S10L7 should have much better SPL and SQ than you 10w1's. If you want to stick with JL get nothing other than the W7's.

Message: hey john, im runnin about .98 cu ft per sub, each in its own seperate chamber. then i filled each chamber about half full with polyfill. and they are right about the SPL and SQ for the most part.
i think the solo barics have about the right mix of both, i can turn the bass boost up real high on the amp and they just slam, or put it about half way, and they still slam, but everything is still clear.
as for the solobarics vs rounds, i used to have 2 12" Xplods so i really cant compare. (the sonys were crap). however, i have a friend that has 2 infinity 12s and they sound pretty decent, but the solobarics are a little deeper. but remember, the solobarics need alot of power to move b/c they are alot stiffer than most. and another thing, the square ones have a little more surface area then the round ones, making them equivelent to about a 10.8" round sub.
best thing i could say is listen to your friend's different set ups , or go to a stereo shop and see if they have displays you could listen to.
good luck.

Message: The amp i have, ran my 3 JL 10w1's in parallel with seperate chambers. I never had a problem with the amp running this setup. I had this in a Jeep YJ, and it would make the CD skip it would hit so hard some times. So i think this amp will run the 2 L5's?

Message: This is what is on the box, 960-watt Darlington Power Array, switchable for High Current 1/2 ohm performance or High Power 4 ohm output. Rated power into 4 ohms: High Power Mode-75 watts x 2
High Current Mode-37.5 watts x 2 (official IASCA rating)
Bridgeable for mono and mixed mono app.
300 watts total continuous power into 1 ohm.
And the 75-37.5w is in stereo.
I am running 2 JL 10's in my custom boxes.
Why did you add the polyfill?
Hope this helps.

Message: well, ill look into it.
as for the polyfill, it tricks the woofer into thinkin that the box is really bigger than it is, something to do with cancelling out different frequencies. (something technical like that)
it will get you a little lower bass.
so best advice is go to a craft store, jo fabrics or such, and buy a bag of it, or go to Kmart or such, and buy a pillow, and the stuffing in it is polyfill. fill the box about half full with loose polyfill.

Message: hate to break it to ya, but i have the book that came with the subs right infront of me. and its says....
"NOTE : all sealed boxes should be 50% filled with polyfill."
&
"the use of polyfill will slightly decrease the efficiency, but deepen and extend the low bass response"
&
"recommended volume for a sealed inclosure for the S10L5 is .66 to 1.o cu ft." notice, i said each of my chambers was about .98 not including the sub displacement, so its down to like . 9 or so with each sub in. so my box is not really "so big" and its not over 1 cu ft.
so either Kicker doesnt know how their products work, or your stereo shop aint all its cracked up to be.
and frankly, im goin with kicker on that one.

Message: Polyfill will make the enclosure seem bigger than it actually is as stated above.
The reason Kicker says to do so is that the Solobaric L7 is not living up to its name as a small box woofer anymore like the Solobarics were meant to be.
Just to achieve a decent Qtc, the box has to be huge. The recommended polyfill is meant to somewhat cut down on the peaky response.
I think they are great for getting loud with, though. A local guy is doing 143's with three of the 8's on the Termlab.

Message: 92Dakota is right, model the subs with software and you'll see that Kicker's recommended box sizes are too small for smooth response. The Solos really are SPL subs, I've got an L5 in a small box (right in the middle of Kickers specs) and the SQ is nothing to write home about. But don't get me wrong... for an 8" it slams hard, but it's not as smooth as the old round Kicker Comps in the same small sealed box.
Polyfill does makes a difference! Read this: http://www.integracaraudio.com/caraudio/resources/fiberfill/

Message: I did not mean to seem like a smart ass, or to criticize. When i was on Kicker's site, i did not see anything about polyfill. This is why i was curious about the size of your box and why the polyfill. So what i am hearing is, i would need a box that is 1 cu ft or better to have the L5 to sound right.

Message: its cool dude.
i wouldnt go with a box bigger than the recommended size (.66 to 1cu ft) unless u wanna make a ported box.
i would make the 1 cu ft and add the 50% polyfill to it, and as long as you are givin enough power, the thing will slam. each L5 10 is 450 rms, and im givin mine 500rms a peice and there is no distortion, so they can handle alot.
