I just installed an aftermarket stereo (JVC). At higher volumes I get a crackling noise in the speakers. This only happens when the engine is running. Am I picking up ignition noise? Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Check your ground and then if it looks fine, run a better ground. If you're using the stock ground wire try grounding the head unit directly to the chassis.

Good idea, but if that doesn't work, disconnect one speaker at a time and see if the noise is present in the others, could have a chaffed speaker wire.

Also, check your plug wires, if you've swapped to some low grade aftermarket wires, this might be the problem.

Thanks for the help guys. Redid ground and all speaker wires. Got better but not completely gone yet. Would a bigger gauge wire help with the higher power output?
