Subject: steel sub box? IP: Logged
Message: Would a sub box made of steel sound alright? I was thinking of makeing something like that for my regular cab '94. I was thinking of useing the cab floor and back of the cab as part of the box. I figure it would take up much less room than a partical board box. And maybe i could line it with that dynomat stuff.

Message: It would have to be properly designed with ribs and stiffening elements. Otherwise, it'll vibrate, buzz, and make all sorts of noise.

Message: yes it would make lots of noise, if it was to small it would pull on your motor and eventually damage your motor. if you wanted to use your back seat or something as part of the box, make sure it is sealed properly and do an infinite baffle box if possible. if you want to go for a more stylish look, just make your box from 3/4" MDF and fiberglass it then paint silver or gunmetal color, that would def. look better than a metal box. or you could cover the box in sheetmetal.

Message: Well i am not going to make the box out of tin foil so it would not vibrate that much. I just wondered if anyone has tryed it. But you guys most likly right it would sound like a tin can. but it would look cool painted up brilliant blue to match my pickup.

Message: couldn't you make it with mdf like everyone else, then plate it or cover it with some thin steel/metal so it will hold the paint like the truck?

Message: I think his original idea was to use the floor and cab as part of the box..because of lack of space...so making it out of thick MDF..then ADDING more metal on top of the wood...would not make sense.

Message: Many install shops do this, they will build the front and sides and attach it to the back wall. Just make sure it is sealed well and use lots of sound deadening material.

Message: hey Martin S, i just built a fiberglass box like talked about above to fit under the rear bench seat of my 92 dakota (exact same as 94). the box fits two 10s with .93 cuft of air space per sub, sealed. sound great. i had it in my truck for about one or two months. i love it but i just bought a 04 chevy colorado and have no need for the box anymore. i am willing to sell the box if you want it. post back here and let me know if you are interested. the box will has round cutouts but can easily be cut square if you would like me too. Just let me know.

Message: hey martin. i have plenty of regular cabs on my lot. i know i have at least one generation II for sure. so making you a custom enclosure wont be hard. we can also just make something to fit behind the seats that is totally custom. just shoot me an email at sales@fiberglassaudio.com i will send you some pics, and we can work something out.

Message: You could make a steel box no and yes i would be a bit noisy, but there are options to make it work. there is this stuff calle dinamat is like a film that you stik to metal that you put in the cars like insulation so that you keep outside noise outside and stop metal from rattle

Message: I asked if might be able to use that dynomat stuff on the first post but nobody said anything so I don't know it might work. There is most likely a reason nobody as built a steel box and i don't really want to be the first one to try it. I was just hoping someone else had tried it and it worked. Oh well

Message: Wouldn't the steel give a weird hollow-type sound? J/w is all. I got 2-10s in mine and they pound the sh*t outta my floor. It rattles and everything. But you can only hear it if you're outside, inside, you can't hear sh*t. Haha

Message: I built one as part of a center console for my 81 ford f150 standard cab that I replaced the bench seat with bucket seats out of a mustang. I will let you know how it sounds, but I used dynamat and expanding foam to fill all the voids. I think it should sound fine. But check other sites and you will see some of the info that I have been reading.
