Message: Height x width x length inside the box, divided by 1728 will give you the air voloume in cubic feet. 12 x 12 x 12 = 1728 cubic inches or 1 cubic foot. If the box has a slant just add the two numbers and then divide by 2, this will give your dimension.
If the box is 14" high, 12" long, 6" inches at the top and 10" inches at the bottom with 3/4" material, the first thing to do is subtract out the material. The interior would be, 12.5" high, 10.5" long, 4.5" at the top and 8.5" at the bottom. Next average the top and bottom dimensions 4.5" + 8.5" = 13", dividing 13" by two will give you 6.5". 12.5" x 10.5" x 6.5" = 853 cubic inches of air volume. 853 divided by 1728 (1 cubic foot) nets .494 cubic feet of air volume.
Now that we have figured out our .494 cubic foot box we still need to subtract the amount of air volume that the sub displaces in the box. Our 10" woofer displaces .06 cubic feet of air so the air volume is now cut down to .431 cubic feet, way too small for a 10" woofer.
Better to find out that the box is too small on paper than after the box is built.
