I was wondering if you are able to keep 2 factory speakers and install 2 more aftermarket speakers. I like the bass in the factory speakers better then the bass in the aftermarket speakers but the mids and treble arn't good in the factory ones but kick ass in the aftermarket ones. thanks

My guess is that the reason the bass is better in the stock speakers is that you aren't getting enough power to the aftermarkets.

Stock speakers are designed to run off the 7-10watts that a stock head unit puts out, allowing them to run at full potential. Aftermarkets are generally designed to eat up anywhere between 25-100watts, depending on the speaker. Bass eats more power than mids and highs by far, so the biggest loss you'd notice in aftermarkets by not feeding them enough power would be the loss of bass.

Sooo. To add MORE speakers to the system using the same source power would actually make all the speakers end up sound worse, instead of better.

You really, IMHO only have three choices. A: Keep the stocks and be happy. B: Get an aftermarket head unit that kicks out decent power to aftermarket speakers that are designed to run on the amount of RMS power that deck kicks out. C: Buy a small 4 channel amp (25x4, or 50x4, etc) and run your aftermarket speakers on it.

Choice C would offer you the best sound, choice A would be cheaper, and choice B would require you to give up the stock appearance by using a different deck..

The stock speakers are 2 ohm and most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm which adds to the problem, all though there are some 2 ohm aftermarket speakers out there. 4 ohm speakers are 1/2 as efficient/loud as 2 ohm speakers. Justi is right, your going to have to change the deck or add an amp to make the aftermarket speakers sound the way they should.

The stock speakers in my 00 Dak were real poor quality, just the mid bass driver with a whizzer cone attached no tweeter, this is why they don't produce upper mid and high frequencies well.

Another thing you could try is to add some aftermarket tweeters to the stock speakers. This would bring out the highs for a reasonable price, maybe $20 for a set of inexpensive tweeters. I don't think the impedance mis-match will sound bad (2 ohm stock speakerw nd 4 ohm tweeters)since your going to be mounting the tweeters up high and you will want them at a lower volume anyway. It would sound bad if the tweeters were screaming over the stock speaker.

They also sound louder because they are paper cones..which produce more bass, are louder but deteriorate and blow much quicker and easier.

Almost all aftermarket speakers are poly, or composite cones..which arent quite as loud or tight, but last many times longer. You just have to amp them quite a bit.

Is it possible to add tweeters to the stock radio? Other Chrysler vehicles (eg. Jeeps) seem to have the same exact radio with tweeters in the the dash..If I could get my hands on a pair would it work? What is the best way to install them?

Just get a pair of tweeters and splice them in with the front speakers, the tweeters should have the crossover built into the tweeter unless you get a real good quality set, then you might have to add a crossover.

Running a crossover for the mids and tweets is the best way to go, but I doubt you will need to do this on a stock stereo. The tweeters will add the highs you want.

Drilling into the door panel is one mounting option, but you could also place them on the A-pillar by the windshield. If you put them on the A-pillar you could get away from drilling and run the wire under the A-pillar cover.
