Subject: Installing Speakers IP: Logged
Message: I am attempting to install a system in my 1999 Dodge Dakota Club Cab. For the front speakers I have to take off the door panels, how do I do this?
Also, I am planning on rewiring so I can use thicker gage wire (rather than the thin stock speaker wire). The stock speakers are on a wiring harness that also has other wires (I am assuming for the power windows/locks). What do I do?
Thanks.

Message: Well, since you are planning to rewire, I am assuming you will be running an aftermarket amp to power your speakers. So, what I would suggest doing is leaving the original wiring intact should you ever decide to sell the truck, you won't have any trouble reverting the sound system back to factory. To remove the door panels, there are screws that have to be removed behind the door handle, the armrest, and I think on the sail (the part over where the mirror is) There may be others but they shouldn't be hidden. Once these screws are removed the door panel is merely being held on by friction clips, so with a pannel puller, screw driver, or just careful pulling, you can pull the panel off easily. There are no screws in the rear, just pull. Speaker wire/signal wire should ideally be run on one side, and power on the other, but this is no big deal, as running wires in a dakota has to date been the easiest install I've had to do.

Message: There are also a couple of crews on the bottom of the door panel that needed to be removed on my 00 Dak, might be different for your 99, don't know.
As far as the speaker wires go DougK is right leave the stock wires intact. I pulled new 14 ga wire through the rubber boot between the truck and door with the aid of a long (18") wire tie. Just tape the wire(s) to the wire tie and fish it through the rubber boot. It can be a real pain since the boot has a bunch of wires in there already, but it can be done, took me about 5 minutes to fish the wire through each side.

Message: Unless your running a lot of power to your front speakers I would not waste the time replacing the stock speaker wire in there... it's fine and will handle up to 200 watts, especially for just mids and tweeters.

Message: Thanks for your help. I installed everything just fine (except for a few minor set backs -- but install that I have ever done). Thanks again.

Message: I have a 2003 dodge dakota SLT and I converted the tray under the back seat to fit 2 8" subs, But my system consists of this...a 50wX4 pioneer head unit, a 400 Watt Amp to power 2 4" Pioneer speakers in the front door panels able to handle 150 watts, with bass blockers that are 99hrz and the 2 8" subs that can handle 200 watts w/10awg wire, then I have 2 6 1/2" pioneer speakers able to handle 150 watts mounted in the back side panels hooked up to the rear speaker wires of the radio my question is...what do I need to do or change to get the best quality sound out of this system?
