Subject: an 18" in my rc dak??? IP: Logged
Message: i was just wondering for all you real audio buffs out there that know box parameters etc is it possable to cram one 18 or at least a 15 into my dak?
the reason i ask is one of my friends at work has one audiobahn 18 in his explorer and OMG that thing beats harder 30 feet away than my truck does on the inside :-)
just a thought
thanks in advance for the serious replies;

Message: Simple Answer: anything is possible if you really wanted it. If you REALLY wanted, you could install the subs in the truck box, and port them through the cab. Not sure how this is done, as I have never seen nor installed in this manner, but I have heard about installing this way. If you don't need your seat back all the way, you may be able to get such a beast installed behind your seat, depending on the depth of the sub.
You may be able to get the sound that you want with a smaller sub, but bigger box, You wouldn't think it, but when done properly, I have seen a single smaller sub outperform a pair of larger subs. In my old car, I had a 12 inch Audiobahn AlumQ Sub, Powered by a RF 500.2 amp. My brother had a pair of JL 15's in his car, powered by a "matched" (sold as a kit from the dealer) amp. My single 12 outperformed his dual 15s.
In my 97 Dak CC I am debating between building a custom box and lifting the rear seats v. T-Forms or a Stealthbox.

Message: I'm not sure that you can fit one behind the seat. Bigger subs are deeper and require lots of air. I have two 18" subs that I'm going to put in the bed and have them ported through the cab. I have now had all sizes from 8's to 18's and in my opinion bigger is better.

Message: reg cab, thanks for the replies i was thinking about keeping it in the cab not cutting any holes in the back wall etc.
maybe i will find a way just to put a really good 12 in there, i have a solo baric L7 10 now. its alright, but it dosent get out of the cab hardly at all. even with the door open.....
oh and my amp is an mtx thunder 6500d (sub is wired at 1 ohm) with a 1 farad power cap.

Message: If you had a bigger cab, you could just build a custom box and put one in there. I think that MTX makes a system for reg. cab dakotas that includes 2 10" subwoofers, one behind each seat, but that doen't help you with an 18".

Message: I am looking to do the same in my rc. Just a single single sub setup.
I used to have 2 10"s that hit pretty well in the truck but barely could be heard outside of the truck.
I am loooking to go the 1 single 12" speaker. Any one know of a good competition 12" that would be good?
This is what my box will look like, but i need to know also how long the front piece should be.
Top Width: 3"
Bottom Width: 8"
Back Height: 15"
what should the front height be?

Message: so i take it that the box in question will be sealed? i had a 12 in a sealed Q-logic box in my rc dak, but it did'nt fit behind the seat right (3 1/2" too long) so i had the pass. saet up really far and the box longways behind the seat. talk about ghetto lol.
i was just thinking that instead of buying more stuff, to just get a ported box for my 10" solo baric L7. i have heard that they sound way better in a ported box, than in a sealed one. kicker's site says that a ported box for my sub should be: 1.25 cu. ft. min and 2.25 cu.ft. max. so i'm gonna go for about 2 cubic feet of volume. my cousin's husband builds boxes and was really big into competitons a while back (until some jealous A-hole broke into his explorer and cut up all of his speakers) now he has 4 kicker comp vr 15s in his expediton, man that system rocks :-0
sorry so long winded.....

Message: The pythagorean theorem is for triangles, which the design of the box is if you subtract 3" from the top and bottom. The easy way is to leave the front of the box for last then simply measure the opening.

Message: I have some MTX 10"s and they are nice. Other good brands are Concept and JL Audio. Sony Xplods are horrible. I get more from 2 MTXs than my friend got from 3 Xplods.

Message: i had a jbl gt 12, it hit pretty deep and hard. but it was also a good sub for rock too. best of all it's sensitivity was 93 (i think) and it was cheap. it got out of the cab OK but as explained earlier it did'nt fit behind the seat....

Message: for an 18 mounting depth is going to be your biggest chalenge maybe an inverted box and no back rest for the center console. box along bottom up thin between seats and then the sub, box shape isn;t nearly as important as volume.
try a nice 12. jbl gti, idmax, etc. I have an idmax 12 slkot ported 2.0cu in my cc on 1500 watts and its loud makes my eye lids flutter on country.

oh well i'm just gonna work with my solo baric, i have herd that they "can" sound like 12s with the right setup. i don't know how true this is, but it sounds better than any other 10 i have herd.

Message: the front of that box in the picture should be ~15.8", i don't even know how you came up with 17".
5^2 + 15^2 = 250
sqrt of 250 is ~15.8
perhaps the math is not that simple for some....
