 Subject: noise coming from sub

My subs are not in a box yet or hooked up, however when i push down on one of them I hear a crackling noice, however this does not happen when i push down on the other one. does this mean that this sub is blown, and if not does anyone know what may be the problem?, will they still work? thanks

Are they new or used? If they are new, it might be some glue releasing or the cone flexing, nothing to worry about as it sould go away after they are fired up and play for a while. If they are used, the voice coil is probably burned and dragging in the magnet, this is bad! Make sure you are pushing straight down on the cone too, if your deflecting the cone as you push it down you could be pushing the former into the magnet which will make noise.
A burned vioce coil has a sh,sh,sh dragging noise as the cone is pushed down and coming back up. The noise could also be louder and crackle as you said if the voice coil is realy burned up and the wires are floating around the former. Either way, if the subs are used and the voice coil is burned up it's probably best to get a new set of subs, since the other sub not making noise was probably subjected to the same abuse as the noisy sub.

yes, they are used subs, would i be able to take them into an audio store and have them look at them for me? and do you think there is a charge for something like that? thanks

Some manufacturer's can fix the sub by replacing the voice coil and surround, basically rebuilding the sub, but it might be cheaper to replace the subs if they didn't cost that much.
