Subject: Semi Noob Question... IP: Logged
Message: Ok I got a REALLY easy stupid question.
I have been to my share ot car/truck/automobile shows and something I consistantly see is subs FACING THE WRONG WAY.
Well maby not the wrong way (subs are nondirectional), but why is this?
The obvious answer is that people like to show off their magnets and they think it looks cool.
I do not think it is to produce better sound because almost every system I have heard with the subs facing down sounds muddy and does not hit as low.
So what is the reason? For looks, do some subs sound better firing the other direction, or do some subs have some crazy heat (lol) and burn up (can this even happen?) if they are not facing downward?
Please help me answer this cunundrum (sp?)
Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

Message: Well I know some people try to pass this off as a better way to mount them, or they are supposed to be that way, or "professionals with good systems have these subs" but like you said, In every vehicle ive seen the subs set up like this the sound is not as good, and not usually even as hard, so the only conclusion i can come to is they think it looks cool.

Message: For looks, mostly. One (dubious) side benefit is that you don't have the speaker taking up room inside the box.
"I do not think it is to produce better sound because almost every system I have heard with the subs facing down sounds muddy and does not hit as low."
There will be little if any difference.

Message: Hey Jim,
I still think I DO notice a differance. It is not as big as I may have made it out to be, But I really to belive that you lose something when you fire INTO a box.
Now maby it was just that the subs were cheep (porb the case). But I really do notice a differance.
Also has anyone ever noticed some of the CHEEPEST subs have really nice looking magnets and housings. Just something I noticed.
Anyway,
THANKS A LOT for ALL the replys.
Always Thankfull,
Ben J.

Message: (1) looks cool (2) sub doesnt take up air space. Theoretically they should sound the same either way but I think the basket of the sub may muffle the sound somewhat and if it is a system with some subs magnet-out and some cone-out then they have to be wired correctly in order not to cause cancellation.

Message: low frequencies are omnidirectional and in a closed field (like a car interior) tend to pressurize the field. You should not hear any difference.
Also has anyone ever noticed some of the CHEEPEST subs have really nice looking magnets and housings. Just something I noticed.
You mean like those Audiobahn woofers with the "flame" motif on the basket? Those have to be the flimsiest baskets I've ever seen on a woofer.
I still think I DO notice a differance. It is not as big as I may have made it out to be, But I really to belive that you lose something when you fire INTO a box.
Well, it could be that you think you heard a difference, because you were expecting to. Our perception the things we hear is very susceptible to preconceived notions (the "placebo effect".) This is how some vendors can get away with selling $1000 speaker cables.
