Subject: Installed My RF Sub!
IP: Logged

Message:
hey,

i finally received my final part of my order from sounddomain.com - my q-logic 8" truck sub-box- on thursday i think- yes thursday. my dad didnt want to install or do anything friday afternoon after he got back to work so we started on saturday, around 1:00 pm, after i had to do chores and clean the house..lol.

for the next 5 hours, seriously no joke, we worked on installing everything. i think we did a very very nice professional job (mostly my dad- very good carpenter/handyman)..we started out screwing an about foot-14 inch by 6 inch piece of wood (.5" thick?) to the back, where the jack/black metal thingy is supposed to be)- its hard to explain how my dad did it, but it was secured to it. this process required lots of drilling and planning, etc. then we had to screw the empty sub box to the wood, drilling, screwing, etc. oh yeah, before we mounted the box onto the piece of wood, we inserted the subwoofer wire (12 ga- 12ft -bought 9.99 at circuit city) into the back- the wire terminal of the box, because obviously it is right up against the back of the truck..then we proceeded to mount the rf he2 8" sub into the box..

we wired the voice coils in series? or in parallel?- the one that made the positive and negative together, and then the other positive and negative to the terminal at the back of the box, using 14 ga speaker wire, bought from walmart, and the audio crimp terminal thingys at the end. then we put the sub into the box, screwed the box down to the wood, and then screwed the sub itself to the wood diameter to secure it.

lets see..then we began the amplifier installation- my dad cut an about 12"X9" piece of wood (.5" thick?) to mount the amplifier onto it. we screwed the amp to it, then mounted the amp vertically onto the back metal panel, about 8-12"
to the right of the sub (towards the passenger side). then i think we connected the sub wiring to the amp, using the bridged positive and negative, and putting lugs at the end. then i think we did the battery/power red wire, but not connecting it; we (my dad) found a good place to screw a hole and put a rubber grommet thingy there and then threaded the red wire throught there into the interior of the truck. we used wire tires to secure the red wire under the hood, keeping it away from the middle. then we took off the moulding and put black wire loom on the wire. having that done, then we connected the rca cable to the back of my sony cdxmp30 cd head unit- conecting to the rear channel output.

we then soldered the blue wire of the wiring harness and alongside the rca cables, ran them under the moulding on the right side (opposite red wire) with wiring loom around it). then um we got the ground, black wire, and "grounded" it by screwing it with a nut to the actual back metal chassis/panel, cutting the wire to be only 8" long? lemme see, if i havent forgotten anything, then we took the lead off the battery, connected the lug thing to teh battery, put the lead back on, and then turned on the battery to see if the sub and amp would work! guess what, didnt work! the amp wouldnt turn on.

we checked all connections, and then came to the conclusion, using a voltmeter, that the rem turn on connection wasnt 12 volts. so then we researched teh internet on the sony online support, and found out what each of the 9 pins of the wiring harness did- blue, yellow, black, etc. so for whatever reason, our blue wire didnt work, but we saw the red wire- switched 12 v source, yellow- was constant, so the amp would always be on, so we tried the red- this was today, sunday, cuz by the time we finished all that installation on saturday it was night time, and my dad was tired, and didnt want to work anymore.

so on sunday, about..lol..6pm we took off the electrical tape around where we had soldered teh blue wire, cut it off and then soldered it to the red wire. yay! then we started teh battery and the amp turned on! and then i heard the sub start pumping! it was awesome..my dad thought it was pretty cool, too. im really impressed at the quality of the small 8" sub..i think it sounds just as good as the 10" subs i heard at best buy. im not naive enough to say it "hits like no other" but my sub is fairly powerful. it hits hard, when u turn the gain way up obviosuly it turns too boomy, but in the middle it hits nice, fairly tight, and deep. it sounds very good. i tried out the sub for perhaps 10-20 minuts total, testing out various songs, it sounds good with rap, r&b, reggae, and rock pop. im so happy.

another cool thing is that the sub box carpetting is gray, the color of my interior- my seats, moulding, carpetting, even my head unit- sony- is black and gray, and the amp is gray, so it all matches really well. the wiring is all very nice and tidy and im very happy. i cant wait to start driving my truck tomorrow, in the morning!

oh yeah, and i didnt have to scoot my seat up one inch. it all fit very nicely behind my seat.

i'll try to take some pics with my dig. cam tomorrow and post them one way or another so ya'll can see what im talkin bout.

later

sweet, sounds like a good setup. i had a qlogic box in my 98 rc dak, with a jbl power series 12 in it. i had it ghetto rigged, ( man it looked like crap lol) the box was about 4 inches too long to fit properly behind the seat so i just stuck it back there longways and put the pass seat way up.
that sounded pretty good, but the ghetto look got the best of me. so i bought a solo baric s10L7/truck box combo, OMG that 10 way outpounds the 12 i had.
sounds alot tighter too. so if your lookin for good thump in a small space, the solo baric L7 is the way to go. one thing to note though, the solo barics are very power hungry. my mtx thunder 6500d pushes it plenty hard, though i has to put a 1 farad cap in.

woah sorry for the long winded post

keep thumpin

Dan
