Its just that you could have had something much more impressive with the price you paid for the stock system.

Message: It's all in what your used to or willing accept. For example I own a 53" TV thus a regular 27 or 35" set looks tiny ;)
Factory systems are overpriced, have poor frequency response and a serious lack of dynamic range. Once you hear music on a good system you'll notice what your missing with your sub-par "upgraded" factory audio system.
I had one of those factory Infinity systems in my '97 Eclipse GS-T and it sucked compared to the modest system I have in my truck now.
On the other hand... if you like what Dodge put in then great - you can save yourself the money and headaches of ripping it out and replacing it.

Simple. The Dakota system forces the door speakers to handle all of the low-frequency reproduction, and they aren't able to handle much bass. So, they tend to overtravel and "blat" at only moderate volume levels.
If the system had a proper high-pass on the door speakers and a true subwoofer, it would be much, much better.

The option price for the Infinity system is $475. I'd like to see you build an "impressive" system with $475.

Message: The upgraded stock stereo's sound a heck of a lot better than stock stereos 10-20 years ago and for the price they aren't bad. How much would a stereo shop charge to install a CD stereo, small amp, front components and rear speakers, heck of alot more than $475.
But,,, I would rather invest the $475 in quality equipment. If you shop online and know what to look for you could build something fairly inexpensive that has good sound quality.
My Dak system ran around $700, New head unit, changer, sub amp and front components. Online retail return, mid-high amp, rear components and I had 2 RF subs that rounded out the install. Not real high end stuff, but definately not cheap equipment either.
Retail price $1500.
Installed price $2000-$2500.
DSW packrat cheap b@stard price $700

Message: Stock CD player - no charge.
LOC : $10
Front Stage :
Two way Infinity Reference 6.5" component system. $110
Subwoofer :
Bazooka non-powered 4 ohm 8" tube. $90
Not the best, but much more bass than stock system
Amplifier :
MTX Thunder 6304
Front two channels to components - 90 watts / side
Rear two channels bridged to subwoofer - 325 watts - gains turned down of course
$130
That leaves $135 for shipping and installation.
If you have riders in the backseat often, then you can find some nice sounding rear coaxials for $35-40.
You will end up with a proper sounding setup with a sound stage that is it front of you, rather than as many speakers as possible being crammed into a cab.
It will also have much better low end reproduction.

Message: I haggled the dealer down to well under blue book, heck, I don't think he made much off this truck. so, to think he profited a lot on a well marked-up system is a bit silly. My point here is NEGOTIATE YOUR A$$ OFF (pun intended with the $'s)
