Subject: which ampkit to buy.. IP: Logged
Message: ok,
i finally have enough money to buy everything i want to buy @ sounddomain.com- 8" dual two-ohm rockford fosgate he2 subwoofer, q-logic 8" truck-subwoofer box, and the rf 201s amplifier- at around $220 plus shipping (i have 260 now)..now my question is what amp kit i need to buy.
i do have a $60 best buy certificate, so i could buy a really nice amp wiring kit there, but what should i be looking for. i dont care if i am getting "ripped off"- at least this is not coming directly from my pocket..i also recently looked at walmart, and saw a "200watt amp kit" and a "300w" wiring kit- does it matter that i buy a kit thats rated a little over what my actual specs are (250w rms)? also, what's the deal with the different "gauges" of wire- i.e. 6,8,10 gauge wiring..what difference does it make?
thanks a ton

Message: Get the 200W amp wire kit from WalMart, it's a smoking deal with all the stuff you get in the kit; power, ground, remote and RCA cables, plus speaker wire. Only thing you should purchase outside of this kit is some 14-12 ga wire to go from the amp to the sub, I think this kit has 16 or 18 ga wire which will connect the amp to sub, but not correctly for proper power output. You can get a more expensive kit, but why spend $40-60 when you don't need this expensive of a kit to wire up a simple sub amp.
The 300W kit has less stuff in it, but has better wire, I think 8 ga power and ground instead of 10 ga wire on the 200W kit. 8 ga wire can carry more current than 10 ga wire, but the 200W amp will be happy on the 200W kit with the 10 ga wire. If in doubt go bigger. Just make sure the 201S can accept 8 ga power and ground wires if you go with the 300W kit, check it out when you get the amp.
The bigger the guage number of wire the less current it can carry, the smaller the guage number the more current it can carry, 18 guage wire will not carry as much current as a 12 ga wire.
Save the $60 gift certificate for some tunes to test out the new sub.

Message: I'd buy the kit that offers the biggest power and ground wires. For 300 watts 8 gauge is good, 10 gauge will work fine, but it's little on the small size. It really depends on the distance you have from the battery to the amp and how much current the amp draws. Also keep in mind most amps can double thier power in short bursts (RMS vs peak), plus if you get a bigger amp later you'll be glad you ran the heavier wire.
Check this chart: http://www.crutchfield.com/installguide/S-sydjvInA0Gw/cable_gauge.html
Most importantly... put the fuse at the battery! The fuse protects the wire from passing too much current and burning up! Repeat the fuse protects the vehicle NOT the amp - so put it as close to the batter as possible.
BTW I got 8 guage wire on my 440 watt amp and the fuse is within 14" of the battery.

Message: this is a good setup. don't waste your money on wires that have "monster cable", etc. written on them.
