Subject: Box tuning... IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking into getting a sub for my Dakota, and I'm thinking about building a bass reflex box. The thing is, I want to tune that enclosure to a very low f3. Like 15hz. The reason is that I have some really sick CD's with info down to about 16hz(pipe organs), and I don't want to destroy the woofers by going below the tuning freq of the enclosure. I'm looking into MTX 9500 12". Does the port get longer and bigger to make f3 lower? Thanks.

Doesn't work that way. Forcing a speaker to play lower than its in-box resonance is asking for trouble. Trying to extend response of a ported enclosure by lengthening the port is not a good way to go about it. You'll get a significant droop in the response between the speaker's resonance and the port's, and you're likely to get excessive port noise as well.
You need to find a speaker that is optimal for a ported enclosure tuned to a true 16 Hz roll-off. Alternatively, find a sealed-box woofer that offers an F3 about 35 Hz. With cabin gain, you'll still get the kidney-jarring shake at 16 Hz.

Message: I kinda thought that was the case. Several years ago I had Kicker Solobaric 10's in a box that gave them about .5 cubic feet each, and they worked really well. I just listened to the new new MTX sledgehammer enclosure with two 10" 9500's, slot ported. WOW. The same could be said about the price, however...I think I'll keep to using sealed boxes.

Message: hi guys
i dont know a thing about box tuning. all i know is i have an audiobahn aw1206t. its the one with the flames on the cone, handles about 1100 watts continuous power, and i want a ported box that will play some really deep low frequency bass. i have heard that the right box can make the world of a difference in the way your sub sounds. please help if you have any knowledge about this matter.
thank you
