Subject: 8" bandpass box? IP: Logged
Message: I got a 97' regular cab and lookin to add to my system. Right now, i got a good JVC head unit with rockford fosgate speakers in the stock spots. I want to add an 8" sub, but I would like to build a custom center console/bandpass box for it. I would love a 10, but it's just too big (the 8" is even pushing it with stock seats). Anyone know of a 8" sub that is designed for or atleast sounds good in a bandpass box? I've never heard or anything less than a 10, and i/m also havig trouble finding a 8" that is for anything other than a tiny sealed box. Any help would be great.

Message: I would check out jl audio. I have a 8 in a bandpass box thats about 5years old and it even hit. not real hard of course but I wasn't disapointed with the sound by any means.

I think they still make one like this, but am unsure I acquired this sub about 5years ago. they probable have something better.
If you have the plastic consle you can just cut it so the sub slides in undrneath the console.

Message: I couldn't find the one that you're talking about on-line. Would a 8" sub designed for a ported box do very well in a bandpass box? The truck is just too small to fit anything else.
I actually got the idea from my friend's stereo. He's got this really nice table top system (can't think of the brand right now) with two 6.5" woofers with a bandpass design. They sound absolutly amazing at all volumes with any type of music. I thought that if I used a 8" in a bandpass, it might make up for the small size. Wonder if anyone has ever done anything similar.

Message: yeah I went and looked and the one I have isn't made anymore. you should be able to find them for most company's. and 8inch bandpass box will usually be the size of a box for a ten inch sub ported or sealed just my opinion.
were are you trying to fit it? a little creative shaping and I managed to get 2cuft ported for the idmax I should get tommorrow in the 40 of the rear bench seat.

Message: I got a reg cab with a 40/20/40 bucket setup and a 5-speed trans. The center seat is small to begin with, and with the stick there it's impossible to seat someone in the middle. Since it's really just wasted space, I want to take that center seat out and build a custom center console/box combo, and not have anything behind the seats.
I have about 10" between the seats for the outside dimensions, so if i use 3/4" material, that leaves about 8.5" inner dimesions. I really just wanted a 10" sealed box, but I've never seen a 10" sub that needs a hole that's only 8.5" diameter.
If I go with an 8", I know I'll have no problom fitting it. I just figured a single 8" bandpass with give me the same amount of bass as a larger speaker.

Message: A ported box will be louder then a sealed box... the problem is they normally have to be a good 20-50% larger then a sealed box for the same sub.
Bandpass boxes waste alot of space, they are pretty speciallized, you might want to read this and rethink your plan: http://jlaudio.com/tutorials/magic/bandpass.html
If your looking for 10" performance from an 8" speaker Kicker's Solo Square subs are the answer. I have L58 and can tell you it sounds more like a 10" because it's surface area is around the size of 9" sub. I'm switching out to an IDQ10 however because the Solos need alot of power to sound good I've learned :(

Message: I though about the Kicker 8's before. That is what I'm going to go with if I can't find a bandpass 8" sub. My friend is really into stereos, so he knows his boxes. It wouldn't be a problem building a well designed box, the problom is finding a small sub designed for it.
If I were to go with a single 8" Kicker square in a sealed box, what would be a good amp to push it? I've only had a Rockford Fosgate before for dual 10's, and I loved 'em. I'd like to stick with the same company. Any recommendations?

It is not the greatest speaker, so you can always change out the sub for something better, but it is a good price even for the box alone!
